      Job summary

      We are seeking a motivated and credible nurse leader to join our senior team as Matron for the Brain Injury Service. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for nursing standards, patient experience, workforce development, and service improvement across two specialist pathways: Complex Rehabilitation and Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDOC).

      You will be part of a collaborative and supportive leadership team committed to values-based care.       You do not need to have held a Matron post previously, but you must bring clinical credibility, sound judgement, and the ability to lead across professional groups.       Main duties of the job

      • Maintain a visible clinical presence across BIS wards, promoting safety, compassion, and dignity.

      • Ensure therapeutic, safe environments that support neurorehabilitation and recovery.

      • Oversee safe staffing, recruitment, and care quality in line with NMC standards.

      • Ensure compliance with medicines management, safeguarding, IPC, and DoLS.

      • Lead on UKROC data submission and use outcomes to inform care planning.

      • Engage patients and families in co-producing goals, discharge plans, and service feedback.

      • Line-manage Ward Managers, role-model standards, and drive team development.

      • Foster a culture of learning, supervision, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

      • Promote inclusion, respect, and shared decision-making at all levels.

      • Manage nursing budgets, workforce planning, and reduce agency reliance.

      • Support training compliance, retention, CPD, and equitable progression.

      • Lead audits, complaints, and incident reviews under PSIRF.

      • Identify themes and risks with QA teams and implement improvements.

      • Ensure audit readiness and regulatory compliance across BIS.

      • Collaborate with estates, families, and external partners to support service delivery.

      • Contribute to strategic goals, represent BIS in forums, and support wider nursing leadership.

      • Registered Adult Nurse (RN1/RN2/RN12) with postgraduate diploma or equivalent experience and ongoing professional development in clinical leadership. Proven senior nursing leadership experience, ideally in neuro-rehabilitation or complex care. Strong track record in service improvement, clinical risk management, safeguarding, and regulatory compliance. Skilled in workforce planning, budget management, audits, and incident investigation. Broad clinical knowledge in neuro-disability and rehabilitation.
