      Job summary

      An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented, ambitious and dynamic Senior Nurse to join the Lewisham Medicine and Community division as the Matron for Care of Older Adult at Lewisham Hospital.

      The matron will beresponsible and accountable for the overall clinical and operational day-to-day delivery of clinical standards of care and the management of the nursing workforce, in accordance with set objectives, targets, quality standards, controls and resource constraints, that ensures the delivery of a high quality, compassionate, patient centered service that meets patients' need.

      In this post you will be resilient and able to deal with complex situations and must also be able to balance the need to be a visible leader with managerial responsibilities.

      You should be passionate about advancing the field of Older Peoples Nursing and have the ability to inspire and support others to reach their maximum potential.

      The matron will support the Senior Matron and the Head of Nursing to provide professional leadership and management for the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Trust Strategy.

      Main duties of the job

      The Matron's key responsibility is to ensure that the patient experience is of the highest quality inspiring patient and public confidence. This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility and surveillance. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Matron's Charter in their area.

      Job responsibilities

      Care Provision

      To manage the quality of the provision of nursing care at all times, within their ward / department by:

      • Holding Ward/Departmental Sister/Charge Nurse to account for delivery of their key performance indicators in clinical areas on the Tendeble and Clinical documentation database
      • In conjunction with the Directorates Workforce Manager ensure effective action is taken where nursing performance is at risk of falling below expected levels and standards are not maintained.
      • Ensuring that the Trusts Nursing and Midwifery priorities are implemented locally

      To take appropriate action on issues of staff discipline, grievance, poor performance and sickness, up to but not including dismissal.

      You will be required to demonstrate effective and sustainable leadership and management skills.Effective communication, a strong collaborative approach and the ability to engage the nursing workforce and multidisciplinary team within an ever changing, ever challenging environment is essential. You will have to confidently juggle and deliver on priorities and projects, understanding how the divisions operational priorities fit within the trusts strategic plans.

      Risk & clinical governance:

      • Ensure patients are cared for in a clean and safe environment, including theappropriate decontamination of multi-use equipment, taking remedial action ifstandards are not maintained.
      • Be champions for driving the infection prevention and control agenda and challenging poor practice.
      • Manage and respond to complaints and adverse incidents, including serious untoward incidents. Liaise with the PALS Department regarding informal complaints and where possible actively diffuse complaints to avoid escalation
      • Undertake root cause analysis and develop action plans, ensuring that this leads to change in practice.
      • Ensure Risk Assessments are undertaken and action plans implemented in wards and departments
      • Lead on the implementation of patient safety strategies such as Saving Lives and Clinical Performance Indicators.
      • Share best practice and drive improvements in patient care through the Matrons Forum.
      • In conjunction with the Surgical Head of Nursing, the Matron will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards within clinical teams.
