      Summary

      This position on a daily basis job site reports to locations in Nassau and/or Suffolk County as per the assigned project or task and works in conjunction with the Bargaining Union Zone Agreement.

      The Mechanic B position is within the Substation Technical Maintenance Civil organization. This group supports several company lines of business and is involved with maintenance, repairs and installation of all civil construction related items inside substations. Such items include but are not limited to: earth excavations & grading, the installation & removal of concrete structures, steel erection, conduit installation, grounding, earthwork items, and other various carpentry related tasks.

      Classification covers employees engaged in performing independent or cooperative work within the limits outlined below. Assist in more involved work. Carry through quality of work described.

      Read, interpret ordinary plans, drawings and specifications. Using and setting up ordinary blocking, rigging and scaffolding. Duties require familiarity with properties worked on. Must be capable of preparing written reports and sketches in connection with his/her work. Work may be off the ground. Operate, maintain and sharpen hand and power tools and equipment necessary to perform duties.

      Have knowledge of Company tools, equipment, standards rules, practices and have the ability to perform work safely in compliance with the Company safety requirements. Must be capable of instructing and training lower grade personnel in working methods and safe work practices. Keeping and leaving the site of work in a reasonably clean, orderly and safe condition.

      May be responsible for and direct work of one or two assistants.

      Perform similar or less skilled work of a general mechanical nature for which s/he has been trained.

      Job Duties & Responsibilities

      Perform job duties as outlined below:

      Assist in excavating and installing foundations and grounding systems, concrete work, trenching and erecting steel.

      Erecting rough forms for concrete work.

      Build, repair, alter and add to structures while performing general carpentry work and maintain carpenters tools.

      Read and interpret ordinary plans, drawings and specifications.

      Perform general carpentry work and maintain carpenters tools.

      Operate lathe, drill press, shaper, power hacksaw and similar machine tools when performing less complicated machine work.

      Layout and fabricate reinforcing bar, pipe and miscellaneous steel assemblies.

      Use gas welding equipment for less complicated welding by gas or electric process.

      Set up and operation of either electric or gas welding equipment and familiarity with and observance of rules for maintenance and operation.

      Have knowledge of Company tools, equipment standards, rules, practices, and have the ability to perform work safely in compliance with Company safety requirements.

      Job Qualifications

      • Make arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages.
      • Ability and willingness to work at heights.
      • Hold a valid Driver’s license and be able to pass the DOT Medical and receive a Commercial Driver’s license – A.
      • Pass a company physical due to the physical nature of the job requirements
      • Pass the physical/mechanical screening requirements - Box of Rocks, Plate Test, ladder test and Operating Man lift device.

      • Valid NYS driver's license
      • CDL preferred

      Training and Courses

      • Company Driving Test.
      • Mechanic B Assessment/Practical.
