About Fleet Management Department .DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe Mechanic IV Welder/Fabricator will be responsible for precision welding and fabrication of custom components from various materials including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. This role involves interpreting complex technical drawings, ensuring adherence to tight tolerances, and operating advanced fabrication tools. Ideal candidates will have experience in a custom fabrication environment and be capable of working independently or leading small teams on high-complexity projects.
Including:
Perform advanced MIG, TIG, and Stick welding on a wide range of materials and thicknesses.
Fabricate components with high precision using cutting, forming, and machining equipment (e.g., CNC press brake, plasma cutter).
Use precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, squares) to verify part accuracy.
Perform layout and fitting of complex assemblies without supervision.
Maintain high standards for weld quality, appearance, and dimensional accuracy.
Assist in fixture design, prototyping, and process improvement for custom fabrication jobs.
Maintain and troubleshoot welding equipment and fabrication tools.
Adhere to all safety regulations, PPE requirements, and quality control procedures.
Advanced proficiency in MIG and TIG welding; ability to weld stainless steel, aluminum, and exotic alloys.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and mentor junior welders/fabricators.
MUST FURNISH OWN TOOLS AND SAFETY SHOES.ADDITIONAL SALARY INCENTIVES ASE/EVT CERTIFICATION PAY (UP TO $5,200 ANNUALLY)EVENING/NIGHT SHIFT INCENTIVE PAY (UP TO $3,000 ANNUALLY)WORKING CONDITIONSThere is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts bruises and minor burns. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.This is a FLEET Department Position at the Tier I Level.EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
High school degree of GED equivalent.
Ability to read and understand service, repair, and parts manuals; mechanical diagrams; safety, and hazardous materials communications.
Advanced math and computer skills required.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Seven-year experience of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required.
Or
An Associate’s degree (at least 18-month program) in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology plus, five-year equivalent of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:Valid Texas Class C upon hire. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6-months of employment. Must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:Must achieve certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector within 6 months of employment.May be required to achieve Emergency Vehicle Technician certification.
May require mobile air (EPA 609) certification.
Aptitude test may be required.
