      Salary Range : $58,503 - $78,004 annually. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications. This position is Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime provisions.

      Summary

      In support of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering’s (MAE Dept.) research and teaching mission and for the safety of the students, it is vital that the users (teachers and students) of technology in the laboratories and classrooms are trained, that the technology is well-maintained and that there are policies and procedures in place that ensure the smooth operation of the technology. Because this technology is critical to the academic programs of the College, the College maintains an “Engineering Technical Support Program” which includes training and technical and scientific support for the students enrolled in the Electrical, Computer, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering programs.

      Essential Functions

      The primary duties of the Mechanical Engineering Shop Manager, include purchasing, installing, organizing and managing Instructional shop, rapid prototyping/assembly shop, and CNC shop equipment; coordinating and participating in research support for faculty; instructing and supervising students in safety and in use of all shop tooling and parts making; machining, sheet metaling, welding and carpentry; finding solutions for continuing growth issues in shop usage by hiring highly qualified student employees, negotiating wages and defining job requirements for all shop employees.

      The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

      • Meet with corporate equipment donors, making decision if equipment donations are useable and vital
      • Train students on the proper use of the equipment
      • Provide customer support for technology in MAE labs
      • Research, recommend and administer policy and procedures for the engineering labs in the department
      • Provide problem resolution to the technology labs in MAE
      • Work with MAE faculty to build equipment as needed for both research and education labs
      • Supervise student employees hired to support the shop
      • Supervise MAE Laboratory Technician to ensure smooth operation of all instructional laboratories in the department
      • Instruct undergraduate shop related laboratory sections
      • Assist faculty in set-up and support of research laboratories
      • Order /stock / install components and equipment
      • Repair / replace damaged or broken equipment
      • Maintain / repair / order station property
      • Maintain records of all laboratory equipment valued at more than $1000

      Tentative Search Timeline

      Minimum Qualifications

      Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

      • Four year technical degree.
      • Four years technical experience and experience training others in the safe use of machine shop equipment – including but not limited to CNC/manual lathe, CNC/manual mill and sheet metal machines.
      • Experience in engineering design practices and troubleshooting and problem solving in an engineering design and manufacturing environment.

      Preferred Qualifications

      • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field

      Physical Requirements

      • The position requires one to stand or walk for at least 3 hours at a time.
      • Must be able to lift objects ~50 lbs. to waist height and carry objects weighing ~10 lbs. ~50 feet; balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching; reaching, handling, and fingering.
      • Must have the ability to see fine details.
