      Actalent is currently seeking a mechanical engineer for a position with a major utility in the Portland Metro Area. On a daily basis this person will perform design engineering and oversee construction coordination of projects requiring a higher level of project management and technical knowledge. Provide design and project management expertise for gas utility large commercial and industrial meter sets, district regulating stations, telemetry sites, and city gate station projects. Ensure service continuity and fulfillment of installation commitments while meeting customer needs, cost objectives, governmental requirements, and safety and engineering standards.

      Responsibilities

      • Perform and oversee design engineering, planning, coordination, and monitoring of projects related to plants and stations.
      • Provide cost analysis of alternatives to determine cost-effective installation practices.
      • Proactively identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to ensure timely and successful project completion.
      • Provide design and project management expertise for gas storage facilities, compressors, control systems, odorization, and CNG/LNG equipment.
      • Provide engineering support for special projects, including hydrogen and renewable natural gas projects as needed.
      • Review and approve construction drawings to ensure engineering standards are followed.
      • Coordinate with office and field personnel to optimize the use of resources.
      • Provide day-to-day engineering support to field operations while maintaining project workload.
      • Work closely with telecommunications experts and other technical specialists within the organization, fostering a collaborative environment.
      • Assist in preparing budgets, analyzing costs/benefits, and continuously evaluating cost reduction and revenue enhancement opportunities.
      • Learn Synergy software to perform system modeling analysis.
      • Develop alternative engineering solutions to proposed projects to inform cost-based decision makers.
      • Participate in after-hour emergency response program in conjunction with other operations supervisors as needed (level 3).
      • This position may require travel.

      Essential Skills

      • Mechanical engineering degree.
      • 1-5 years of experience preferred.
      • EIT preferred but not required, with an expectation to pursue PE license.
      • Minimum of 1 year of experience in construction-related work or utility construction/installation.
      • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role overseeing and coordinating complex planning and project implementation programs.
      • Ability to plan and effectively manage a wide variety of construction projects.
      • Knowledge and experience in the application of federal pipeline safety rules, American Public Works Association construction standards, and OSHA regulations.
      • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, government representatives, and contractor personnel on technical matters governing construction projects.
      • Ability to analyze budget reports and construction summaries.
      • Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD software.
      • Ability to develop new construction approaches and procedures.
      • Strong writing skills including technical documentation and report preparation.
      • Ability to visit and access construction and other work site locations as required.

      Additional Skills & Qualifications

      • Experience creating design sets and working with piping and process systems related to gas utilities or related fields.

      Work Environment

      Hybrid work schedule: 3 days in office and 2 days remote initially, with the possibility to switch to 2 days in office and 3 days remote after 6 months. Combination of office work and field visits to job sites and customer meetings. During project time, field and job site visits will be more regular, likely weekly. Long-term consulting opportunity with full benefits, PTO, sick pay, and holiday pay.

      Pay and Benefits

      The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $65.00/hr.
