      Job summary

      An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Technologist to join the Computing section of the Clinical Engineering Department at University Hospitals of Leicester. The role involves management and administration of the Trust medical equipment inventory, and specialist software. The post holder will also play a key role in implementing and supporting the implementation of connected devices and technology across the Trust and community.

      The role will be based at Leicester Royal Infirmary and involve working on our other hospital sites.

      Applicants must be qualified to Degree/HNC level, or equivalent, in Electronics or Computing. With demonstrable experience in the use of IT in an engineering or healthcare environment, the post holder will understand the principals of database administration, device networking and integration. Technical update training is available.

      You will have a safety conscious approach to your work and the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels. An ability to cope underpressure, be adaptable and multi-task is required.Experience of the maintenance and repair of medical equipment would be desirable.

      Main duties of the job

      Clinical Engineering is primarily concerned with providing repair, calibration, and maintenance to a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment across Leicester University Hospitals. It is the responsibility of Clinical Engineering to ensure equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime. Clinical equipment covered incorporates electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer software and medical gas systems.

      The post holder will act as an IT specialist within the Department, ensuring that the equipment inventory system is maintained and administered accurately, providing key performance indicators and financial data. The role also includes implementation and networking of a wide range of new and connected devices, both within the acute hospital and virtual ward environments, as well as management of specialist software within the Medical Physics Department.

      The ability to prioritise own workload, work flexibility and accurately are key attributes required for the role.

      Job description

      The post holder shall:

      1. Be an IT specialist for a range of complex networked medical equipment and systems.
      2. Effectively manage the work they are assigned, including the supervision of more junior staff assigned to the same/similar task, ensuring service objectives and targets are met.
      3. Work under own initiative, manage, and prioritise own workload and workload of others and exercise a broad degree of responsibility.
      4. Play a role in organising, prioritising, and undertaking commissioning and unsupervised maintenance or repair of networked medical equipment.
      5. Maintenance and administration of the inventory system for medical devices and to generate KPI.
      6. To ensure the integrity of data held on the medical equipment database.
      7. Assist with the oversight of inventory spares management and stocktaking with Senior colleagues.
      8. Carry out specialist user inventory training for Clinical Engineering technologists.
      9. Maintain maintenance, network and information technology documentation.
      10. Use specialist technical knowledge to set up and maintain hardware and software associated with networked or integrated medical devices.
      11. Communicate effectively with clinical users/IT and Suppliers to schedule servicing or troubleshoot problems with networked medical equipment. They shall assess the seriousness and implications of any reported problems and respond appropriately to the urgency of the user request.
      12. Effectively manage the installation and documentation of software upgrades to medical devices within the organisation.
      13. Write and update written procedures for the performance and functional verification of networked medical devices. Assist in ensuring all relevant documentation such as work instructions are complete and up to date.
      14. Assist Senior colleagues develop and maintain an ISO 80001 data governance system for the section and ensure adequate data protection.
      15. Propose and be prepared to support changes to departmental working practices and to assist the Management team in the preparation of reports and feedback following equipment commissioning, service, repair, evaluation, or failure.
      16. Assist with medical equipment procurement exercises by liaising with clinical staff, company representatives and engineers, either during clinical trials or technical evaluations.
      17. Provide specialised in depth, detailed technical advice regarding the operation, limitations, configuration, procurement, and maintenance aspects of medical equipment to clinical and other staff groups as appropriate. Promote a culture of good customer communications.
      18. Respond to Medical Device Alerts from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and from equipment manufacturers and as directed by the Section Leads or Clinical Scientists.
      19. Investigate incidents/non-conformances and contribute to high quality technical reports stating the outcomes of findings. Supply information to the management team whom will coordinate responses to risk management and external bodies (MHRA).
      20. Attend and contribute to the regular section meetings. Appreciate and influence policymaking and procedural updates. Take part in other formal meetings and working groups as requested by the section leads/clinical scientists
      21. Ensure that our customers receive a high quality, prompt and efficient service at all times and are kept up to date as to the progress of their equipment maintenance repairs and enquiries.
      22. Monitor and oversee trainees on placement and others as requested by section leads/clinical scientists. Provide technical training and supervision to junior staff, and undertake competency assessments in line with the departmental policy on training and competency.
