      Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

      In compliance with BSMH policy and procedures, particularly relating to client confidentiality, the interpreter serves (remotely or in person) as a conduit of communication between speakers of two different languages in the consecutive, simultaneous and/or sight translation modes. The interpreter understands and abides by all published Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics for medical Interpreters in the US. As needed, the Interpreter also contributes to BSMH’s efforts to advance the full range of diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence initiatives.


      Essential Job Functions


      • Accurately interprets from a source language to a target language for patients, staff, and families via VRI, OPI or Onsite as needed.
      • Identifies and resolve conflicts related to the meanings of words, concepts, practices or behaviors, appropriately rendering messages from one language to another accurately, without omissions and additions; all while maintaining message content, context, and style as much as possible in order to facilitate effective communication.
      • Interprets using the consecutive and/or the simultaneous (if explicitly requested) mode of interpretation.
      • Demonstrates cultural competency in dealing with patients, staff and all those being served.
      • Able to travel to local area facilities as designated and as needed.
      • Maintains timely and complete data, information and follows BSMH Language Services processes as requested.
      • Adheres to strict guidelines from the National Standards of Practice and National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.
      • Performs sight translation reading aloud documents in a language other than that in which they were written.
      • Provides cultural mediation to assist in patient care.
      • Follows ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information and maintain client confidentiality pursuant to protocols established by the contract, HIPAA, and industry standards.
      • Informs manager about patients’ concerns or needs for follow up /guidance.
      • Supports the onboarding and orientation process of new interpreters, as needed.
      • Collaborates with and supports Senior Interpreters with occasional execution of patient rounds, as needed.
      • Supports the department’s translation’s function by coordinating occasional processing of requests, as needed.
      • Assists with varying departmental activities and special projects as requested by department's leadership.


      Position Qualifications:


      Certifications/Training
      • Minimum of a 40-hour Interpreting training course from a program that is CCHI approved
      Preferred:
      • 2 Year Associate degree or equivalent experience.
      • National Interpreter Certification obtained within 12 months of hire.

      Education
      Required:
      • HS/GED Diploma
      Preferred:
      • 2 Year Associate degree or equivalent experience


      Work Experience
      Required
      • Experience providing onsite interpreting services on the consecutive, simultaneous and sight modes
      • Ability to translate key words and short phrases
      Preferred
      • Minimum 2 Yr. work experience in an acute healthcare setting with diverse patient populations
      • Experience providing remote interpreting services using a video and/or telephonic platform
      • Translation experience skills/ ability to proofread, edit and revise healthcare basic healthcare documents
      • Familiarity with Electronic Health Records (e.g. EPIC)


      Training
      Required:
      • Completion of a CCHI approved Interpreter training program

      Language
      Required:
      • Spanish Fluency (or corresponding language pair associated with this position).
      • Successful medical interpreting proficiency assessment as condition to hire.
