      Job summary

We are looking for a Medical Receptionist to join our long-established GP practice in the heart of Llanishen Village, supporting 9,900 patients. As part of a close-knit team, you'll be the first point of contact for patients, handling appointments, administrative requests, and general inquiries with professionalism and efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication and IT skills, the ability to work well under pressure, and a keen attention to detail. Previous experience in a GP practice is preferred, but we also welcome applications from fast learners who can adapt quickly to a busy healthcare environment.

This is a part-time role (20 hours per week), with working hours scheduled between 8:00 am and 6:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Working pattern negotiable.

      Main duties of the job

      • Acting as the first point of contact for patients, both in person and over the phone.
      • Managing high volumes of telephone inquiries efficiently and professionally.
      • Booking appointments and processing administrative requests using clinical software (Vision/EMIS).
      • Triaging patient inquiries, directing them to the appropriate healthcare professional or service.
      • Handling medical terminology confidently when responding to patient requests.
      • Communicating effectively with colleagues, medical professionals, and attached staff to ensure smooth practice operations.
      • Maintaining confidentiality and adhering to data protection guidelines at all times.
      • Supporting the administrative needs of the practice with accuracy and attention to detail.

The role requires strong IT skills and the ability to learn quickly, as receptionists must use clinical software and handle medical terminology confidently when responding to patient requests. Professionalism and clear communication are key, particularly when assisting patients who may be distressed or frustrated.

      About us

We are a long-established NHS General Practice in the heart of Llanishen Village, North Cardiff, providing high-quality, evidence-based medical care to 9,900 patients. Our team is led by five GP partners, supported by regular doctors, practice nurses, healthcare support workers, and a wider network of attached staff including phlebotomists, community nurses, health visitors, and paramedics.

We take pride in being a training practice, mentoring both university medical students and fully qualified doctors as they work toward becoming GPs. This commitment to education ensures a dynamic and collaborative working environment, where staff are encouraged to develop and grow within their roles.

While the role of a Medical Receptionist is demanding, you'll be joining a close-knit, supportive team that works together to provide excellent patient care. We value professionalism, efficiency, and adaptability, and provide benefits including the NHS Pension Scheme and free flu jabs.

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
