- Assigns specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS LEVEL II coding books.
- Performs quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Performs various functions involving review, analysis, evaluation, and management coding of diagnostic and treatment procedures contained in outpatient medical records with third party payers.
- Identifies and documents any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.
- Codes complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures on specific DRGs that are identified as difficult to classify.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position may require a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement 5% of the time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes registering new patients into healthcare systems; organizing patient charts and/or inputting medical records data.
General Experience: One year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled, such as, answering client inquiries, assembling organization charts, operating personal computers, and operating a department's automated or manual records systems.
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes maintaining medical records for compliance with regulatory coding requirements, compiling reports and/or appropriate forms for the department. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages
GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes inputting data from and to an automated medical record coding system; knowledge of coding books and procedures; and identifying the correct medical code for each procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
GS-06 - You must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted for GS-06.
Medical Coding Certification is highly preferred.About the company
