      About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency, Tripler Army Medical Center, Directorate of Administration, Patient Administration, Honolulu Hawaii.

      The first referral cut off will be two weeks after the closing of the announcement. Additional referrals will be pulled at the request of management or upon need.

      Duties


      • As a coder, performs a variety of technically complex duties to review and analyze ambulatory/inpatient medical data, code medical diagnoses and procedures, and provides assistance to the professional staff.
      • Codes disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory/inpatient settings and specialties.
      • Performs qualitative analysis of the records to ensure accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data.
      • Determines that diagnostic and procedural terminology used is consistent with currently acceptable medical nomenclature.
      • Selection of the appropriate codes and modifiers requires determining from several possible codes and references the one which most accurately describes the proper primary and subsequent diagnosis.

      Requirements


      • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
      • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
      • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

      In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.       This organization is seeking both inpatient and outpatient coding professionals under this action.

      GS-08: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) coding medical diagnosis and procedures utilizing current coding guidelines; 2) conducting audits of medical records for accuracy of coding; 3) performing coding of inpatient medical records and performing ambulatory coding. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

      Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

      GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes; 2) coding medical diagnosis; 3) and use various data systems to assign codes and retrieve data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

      Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

      GS-06: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) knowledge of basic rules, procedures, and operations to compile and retrieve medical records information to code in a medical record coding system; 2) possess knowledge of medical terminology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

      Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

      GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) maintaining medical records; 2) reviewing medical records for completeness and accuracy; 3) utilizing an automated computer system to input/extract a variety of data; and 4) responding to customer inquiries requesting medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

      Or:

      Education: Successfully completed four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

      Or:

      Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
