- Experience and/or Education:
- Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
- Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position: or
- Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
- Experience: Six months experience as an MST, operating room or surgical technician or other position that demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing in a clinical setting; or
- Education: Two years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation.
- 1. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
- 2. Basic knowledge of medical terminology in order to assemble specialty operating room/clinic instrument sets.
- 3. Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
- 4. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
The Birmingham VA Health Care System is recruiting for a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) for Patient Care Services.
This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be December 18, with subsequent cut-off dates until the position is filled.
Duties
Duties for GS 3 (Entry Level position): The medical supply technician at the GS3 entry-level is responsible for the collection of all used/soiled, non-critical Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) throughout the medical center. The MST utilizes proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection prevention procedures to prevent cross-contamination of other equipment and personnel during the collection and transport of the soiled RMD. The MST is responsible for the systematic manual cleaning and disinfection of non-critical clinical equipment according to selected methods and strict manufacturer instructions. Non-critical equipment includes, but is not limited to, commode chairs on wheels, isolation carts, all pumps, poles, telemetry boxes, warming and cooling devices, seizure pads, code carts, shower chairs on wheels, sequential compression pumps, etc. The MST conforms to and ensures that all safety and infection prevention rules, regulations and requirements (e.g., dress code and traffic control procedures) in both the decontamination and sterile preparation areas are followed by all personnel working in, or entering, the operational work area. The medical supply technician demonstrates basic knowledge of aseptic techniques and understands how to implement procedures to prevent the spread of infection per VHA Infection Prevention guidelines. Under direct supervision, the Medical Supply Technician will perform cleaning and disinfection procedures within scope of their position. The Medical Supply Technician knows what non-critical items they are responsible for cleaning between patients and after discharge. Under direct supervision the medical supply technician will be competent in types and contact times of hospital approved cleaning/disinfectant solution, and procedures. The medical supply technician will maintain a functional awareness of facility policies and procedures.

GS-03 (Entry Level) Experience or Education: None beyond the basic requirements.
Assignment: This is an entry level MST position. MSTs receive guidance from more experienced staff members and require frequent and direct supervision.
GS-04 (Developmental Level) - This is a developmental level MST position. Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection of reusable medical equipment (RME). Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center. Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes. Prepares operating room case carts. MSTs receive guidance from more experienced staff members and require frequent and direct supervision.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-4.
Physical Requirements: The work requires constant physical effort in the receipt, reprocessing, storage and issue of RME, folding of linen items, assembling trays, pans, and case carts, inserting and retrieving loaded sterilized carts from the autoclaves. Hand and eye coordination is required in the disassembly and reassembling of equipment. The worker is exposed to long periods of standing, bending and walking while reprocessing reusable medical equipment. Frequent requirement for the lifting of RME, trays and cartons from storage shelves to carts. Incumbent regularly uses case carts in the delivery of supplies and instruments to the clinical areas within the Medical Center. Material weighs up to 50 pounds.About the company
