      Req#: 4706414
      Reads and records water meter readings accurately on hand-held computers, along an assigned route to initiate billings for utility customers.
      • Imports/exports data between meter reading software and held-held computers.
      • Checks consistency of meter readings and reports unusual cases.
      • Re-checks readings upon high billing, new installations, cancelled service, and removals of water meters.
      • Maintains, replaces, installs, or removes water meters as required.
      • Makes water meter connections and disconnections digging out meters when covered by dirt, cleaning, repairing and testing water meters as necessary.
      • Pumps water out of flooded meters.
      • Inspects meters to insure proper function and reports broken lids, damage, or other meter defects.
      • Assists customers with information regarding observed leaks, service problems and general information or refers to the appropriate source.
      • Notifies customers of water being off for repairs or delivers door hangers for notices of cut offs or turning service on and off at meters, delinquent accounts; locks-out or resumes service once arrangements for payment have been made.
      • Maintains assigned vehicle and tools to ensure that equipment is safe, clean and in useable condition.
      • Operates equipment such as meter box keys, hand tools, and hand pumps, shovels, and picks.

      May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.



      This position is subject to the City of Hobbs’ Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following: pre-employment testing, post accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.


      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

      Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required. Prior meter reading experience preferred.

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
      • Basic skill in computer operation.
      • Ability to walk for long periods of time under adverse conditions.
      • Ability to learn the geography of the City and assigned routes.
      • Ability to perform simple mathematical tasks and operate a hand-held meter reading computer accurately.
      • Ability to deal effectively with negative public contact.
      • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
      • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
      • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
      • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Utilities personnel and general public.
      LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS
      • Valid state issued driver's license.

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors.
