The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Metrology Technician to support mechanical technology tasks. As a Metrology Technician II, you'll join the survey and alignment section of the engineering metrology group. With limited guidance, you'll conduct survey measurements, align electromagnets for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U), and perform magnetic measurements. You'll also gain experience surveying and aligning particle accelerators, photon beamlines, and other LBNL scientific equipment. Additionally, you may perform ground-penetrating radar scans and recommend seismic anchoring for equipment.

      What You Will Do:

      • Provide routine technical support in high precision survey and alignment with limited instruction.
      • Align accelerator and beamline components within tolerances, operate magnetic test stations, and conduct surveys using laser trackers, laser scanners, GPR, and optical instruments.
      • Independently perform survey analysis, design, and fiducialization of components.
      • Document and share survey projects and measurement data.
      • Ensure efficient, accurate data acquisition to minimize downtime and aid project completion.
      • Collaborate with LBNL staff, physicists, scientists, and external users to meet alignment requirements.
      • Calibrate and maintain survey instruments and software.

      Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

      • Perform QC inspections of electromagnets, including basic electrical testing.
      • Use 3D CAD modeling for advanced engineering design, generate fabrication drawings, and assist with fabrication.
      • Operate and program coordinate measurement machines and troubleshoot communication issues between consoles and measurement systems.

      What is Required:

      • Requires 2-4 years of Mechanical Technician experience.
      • High school diploma with strong math skills in geometry, trigonometry, basic calculus, and statistics. Experience with CAD software and 3D system visualization.
      • Understanding of mechanical systems and precision alignment.
      • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
      • Quick to learn new instrument technologies.
      • Strong documentation, data management, and communication skills.
      • Ability to interpret technical requirements and translate into instructions.

      Desired Qualifications:

      • Experience in accelerator survey and alignment or related field.
      • Knowledge of precision survey techniques, analysis, and computations.
      • Familiar with Spatial Analyzer software or similar data acquisition software.
      • Experience with laser trackers, CMMs, and electrical test equipment (multimeters, power supplies, hipot, insulation testers).
      • Proficient in Creo Parametric.
      • Able to carry 50 lbs, work on the floor, and access spaces by crawling.
      • Understanding of console-to-robotic instrument communication and computer-based survey systems.

The hourly range for this position is $34.36 - $49.83. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

      Notes:

      • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
      • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
      • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
