      Position Summary

      Provides leadership in the development and oversight of policies, procedures and guidelines necessary to ensure the accurate and timely accounting and reporting for CPS Energy’s financial activities each month, quarter and annually. Ensures the proper recording of expenditures, the proper and timely payment of the general fund transfer to the City as well as franchise fee payments and sales taxes. Provides oversight and leadership in the preparation of information to support the annual audit. Serves as a key liaison to answer questions from the external auditors. Responsible for the monthly accounting close for CPS Energy and preparation of CPS Energy’s Balance Sheet and Flow of Funds board schedules.

      Tasks and Responsibilities

      • Ensures timely, accurate and complete closing of monthly accounting records and books, to include:
        • Proper recording and allocation of monthly expenditures related to operating and capital activities.
        • Timely and accurate completion of CPS Energy Balance Sheet and Flow of Funds board schedules.
        • Related Analysis of financial statements and monthly/YTD operating results.
      • Oversees the proper accounting for governmental distributions including payments to the City of San Antonio, franchise fee distributions and sales tax.
      • Oversees the proper accounting for materials and supplies inventory, including performing periodic counts, monitoring for obsolescence and development of related reserve.
      • Oversees the proper accounting for coal and fuel oil inventories, including coordination and validation of year-end physical inventories.
      • Provides comprehensive accounting oversight for CPS Energy to include accounting guidance implementation, accounting policy & white paper development and accounting policies, procedures and guidelines development and implementation.
      • Contributes to the successful completion of CPS Energy’s annual financial audit and clean opinion to include;
        • Acting as key liaison to answer critical questions and complex issues received from external auditors.
        • Overseeing the timely and accurate completion of account reconciliations, audit schedules, requests for information and financial package X-files.
      • Manages and mentors development of General Accounting staff to include provision of learning and development opportunities, cross-training, and ongoing focus on staff engagement, safety, and practice of behavioral principles and core values.
      • Develops performance goals and provides feedback in accordance with CPS Energy’s performance management system.
      • Performs other duties, including complex special projects, as assigned.

      Minimum Skills

      Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

      Strong and solid financial management experience to include leading accounting oversight and financial reporting functions and ensuring compliance with accounting standard setters, such as the SEC, FASB, GASB and FERC
      Knowledge and familiarity with monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting processes to include monthly and annual accounting close cycle, quarterly reporting, and financial statement audit
      Working knowledge of financial/utility operational process
      Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling
      Foundational understanding of financial principles, financial statements and other applicable business operations
      Assertive self-starter, with ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, with a high degree of accuracy and ability to handle and/or manage sensitive and confidential information
      Evidence of strong planning and organization skills, essential for managing multiple tasks and large-scale projects of the section while ensuring timely and accurate completion
      Excellent organizational, analytical, planning, multi-tasking, negotiation, problem-solving, verbal, written & communicational skills
      Demonstrated ability to interact well with others (peers, co-workers, all levels of the organization and outside entities)
      Demonstrated ability to contribute in a team environment, either as a team leader or team member
      Must have favorable driving record
      Valid Class C Texas Driver's License

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or other related financial certification
      • Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics or other related business field
      • Proficient in SAP – preferred

      Minimum Education

      Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field from an accredited university

      Required Certifications

      Working Environment

      Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi- functioning printer and calculator.
      Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events. After hours work may be required.

      Physical Demands

      Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
      Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
