      Under direct supervision, you will perform routine work assignments and problem resolution to support other team members tasks. Modeling and Machine Learning Scientist Interns develop, review, and / or implement various types of models. Interns will use sophisticated modeling and machine learning techniques to address important business problems and communicate insights and business impact of model-based solutions to partners. This internship supports the Bank Credit Risk department that is responsible for the development and management of credit risk strategies for consumer credit portfolios with the goal of achieving profitable growth while mitigating risk. Interns will get an in-depth look into credit risk management and the key drivers, trends, and challenges facing the banking industry overall.

      The internship is based at USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, TX. Interns offered full-time roles may have the opportunity to work out of one of USAA’s satellite locations.

      Our Modeling and Machine Learning Scientist Interns, work under direct supervision and following risk and compliance procedures and guidance, perform routine work assignments and problem resolution to support other team members, including the following tasks:

      • Supports development, review, or implementation of model development tasks while working with more senior peers.
      • Communicates modeling insights to technical and non-technical audiences and partners.
      • Conducts model development and/or model review using identified approaches. Receives input from leaders and more senior peers for enhanced modeling efforts. Applies modeling and machine learning techniques such as linear and logistic regressions, time series methods, survival analysis, support vector machines, neural networks, decision trees, random forests, gradient-boosting methods, deep learning, k-means and other clustering methods, various simulation methods, or other sophisticated techniques to solve important business problems.
      • Partners with business, data teams and senior peers to ideate, and / or review powerful and high- quality data features for modeling and machine learning.
      • Assists in building for the future by conducting research on the latest machine learning techniques, large-scale computing, automation, or standard processes in model risk.
      • Uses broad technology stack that includes Python, R, or SAS to develop or evaluate modeling or machine learning solution.
      • Assists to maintain, build, and/or review automation tools and repeatable code base, crafted to promote reproducible research, and to reduce operational risks and costs to the organization.
      • Conduct and/or reviews development and automation of performance monitoring tools to maintain modeling and machine learning solutions.
      • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, supervised, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

      What you need to have:

      To qualify, you must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2024 internship will start on May 29, 2024 and last through August 9, 2024.

      • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related quantitative STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
      • Graduation date cannot be prior to August 10, 2024
      • 0 to 2 years in predictive modeling, model governance, machine learning or large data analysis. OR Advanced Degree (e.g., Master’s, PhD) in quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a Related quantitative STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
      • Experience, to include graduate level coursework, in developing or reviewing modeling solutions based on broad range of modeling and machine learning techniques – e.g., linear and logistic regressions, time series methods, survival analysis, support vector machines, neural networks, decision trees, random forests, gradient-boosting methods, deep learning, k-means and other clustering methods, simulation methods, or other advanced techniques.
      • Understanding of underlying theory and algorithms used to implement modeling and machine learning techniques and methods.
      • Understanding of standard processes in using modeling and machine learning methods to solve real-life problems.
      • Working experience in or advanced degree work directly related to developing or reviewing modeling solutions based on Python, R, SAS or other technology stack.
      • Basic knowledge of technical documentation writing.

      What sets you apart:

      • Pursuing a master’s degree in a quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related quantitative STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
      • Experience with programming languages to include Python, R, and SAS
      • Research papers, publications or other projects involving use of statistical, machine learning methods, data analysis and modeling

      What we offer:

      Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the hourly range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual hourly rate for this role may vary by location. The range for this position is: $23 - $34.

      Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.
