      SENIORITY LEVEL: Mid-Senior Level

      FUNCTION: Research & Development (R&D)

      LOCATION: Southampton

      TYPE OF CONTRACT: Permanent

      ROLE SUMMARY

      What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

      This role is responsible for providing insights through engineering analysis and simulations to support the development of new, integration-ready technologies. The Modelling Engineer II is expected to carry out engineering simulations independently with a minimum of supervision and work in close collaboration with various internal and external project teams. The role holder is expected to actively contribute to world-leading innovation efforts across various categories of BAT.

      What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organisation?

      This role provides engineering analysis of individual technology blocks or assemblies that inform the project and product integration teams about most viable design options and supports solution finding to engineering problems. The Modelling Engineer II actively contributes to advancing fundamental knowledge of the team by providing insights into complex engineering problems through modelling and simulations.

      ACCOUNTABILITIES

      • Carry out engineering analysis activities as part of product/technology development programmes at every stage of project maturity (from early-stage concept evaluation to solving integration challenges)
      • Advance fundamental knowledge and understanding of BAT by providing insights into complex multi-physics processes using high-fidelity simulations
      • Act as an accelerator for concept evaluation, development, and technology integration by providing relevant and appropriate simulation support to project and product integration teams
      • Utilise insights gained from engineering simulations to propose novel concepts and ideas to fuel innovation pipeline
      • Actively contribute and help shaping best practice and quality control processes within team
      • Continuously develop and advance modelling and simulation capability according to simulation roadmap
      • Provide regular communications and updates about project progress in the form of reports and presentations to team and department management
      • Collaborate and meet regularly with internal and external teams and stakeholders to ensure project alignment
      • Actively assist with the protection of innovations by securing IP, liaising with BAT legal department for patent work and patent exploration in collaboration with Senior Modelling Engineer

      EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE

      Experience Required

      • Several years’ experience using modelling and simulation techniques (CFD, FEM etc.) to solve engineering challenges in industry, ideally in a product/device development environment
      • Experience in using CAD software to create high quality models for engineering analysis
      • Sound understanding of engineering fundamentals, principles, and theories
      • Ability to set up, run and post-process simulations independently
      • Experience in modelling multi-physics problems desirable (e.g. thermal, chemical, aerosol, multi-phase etc.)
      • Good appreciation of experimental techniques (such as flow, temperature, aerosol measurements etc.)
      • Experience in data analysis and data visualisation using MATLAB, Minitab or similar desirable
      • Good working knowledge of MS Office products


      Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

      • Ability to work effectively as part of cross-functional teams with internal and external stakeholders and partners
      • Strong communication and presentation skills
      • Sound understanding of project management principles with ability to manage own projects, workload, and priorities

      Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

      • Degree-level qualification in a relevant field of study (e.g. mechanical, aerospace, process, chemical, physics etc.)
