- Experience of developing business intelligence applications and analytics solutions (e.g. using Qlik Sense or similar tools).
- Advanced skills in visualisation tools (such as Qlik Sense), including advanced functions, graphing, tables, calculations and set analysis to enhance application development.
- Experience of creating, debugging and refining data load scripts for a variety of data sources for integration into business intelligence applications.
- Experience of administrating security rules and scheduling/automating tasks.
- Educated to degree level and/or commensurate work experience.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Able to use IT and software packages, including Word & Excel
- Data integration and discovery skills.
- Ability to manipulate and analyse large, complex data sets and design data extraction, transformation and analytical processes.
- Able to troubleshoot and debug errors in application code.
- Able to write queries and stored procedures.
- Interaction with databases using SQL or similar querying languages.
- Collation and recording of performance indicators and statistical data and prepare relevant timely management information
- Experience of using technology to optimise performance analysis (e.g. data collation, linking and visualisation tools) and knowledge exchange (e.g. storytelling with data) linked to compelling and precise senior briefings.
- Working knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript, ASP, HTML etc.
- Expertise in skills related to dashboard production, such as demographics, geolocation / geocoding, data enhancement etc.
- Must possess a reasonable level of numeracy to effectively deliver the requirements of the role
- Ability to build custom visualisations, extensions and widgets to enhance applications (e.g. in Qlik Sense).
- Able to extract statistical data from records for monitoring purposes.

National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS)The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) was created as a key component in the UKs strategy to reduce firearms criminality, supporting UK Law Enforcement at a local, regional and national level as well as offering support internationally through engagement with key European law enforcement agencies and beyond.
Located over three sites in Birmingham and Manchester, our mission is to provide a national centre of excellence for forensic science, intelligence and knowledge around the use, supply, distribution and manufacture of illegal firearms and ammunition. The Data Visualisation Research Officer is a brand new role for NABIS, located in Birmingham City Centre this role will change the way we use and interpret our data.

Role Purpose:Providing an intelligence research and data analytics function for NABIS, targeting firearms related criminality. This role is key in providing data sets and subsequent applications that deliver data visualisation tools in support of the Intelligence reporting function. They will ensure that accurate and timely data is available for those who need it. They will access data sources utilising programming skills to create, test, debug and refine data load scripts for a variety of data sets, from varying sources, for integration into applications and visualisations.
Role Responsibilities:• Use of specialist applications to visualise data to enable users to gain meaningful insights
• Prepare data and develop Dashboards to support the NABIS Intelligence Cell identify risks and manage performance
• To perform National and International firearms tracing requests by liaising with Europol, Interpol, Firearms Manufacturers, UK Military, Border Force, National Crime Agency and UK Police Forces
• To collate, manage and disseminate intelligence reports
• Assist with strategic assessment, practice advice and doctrine relating to firearms crime for the law enforcement community and government.
• Process and evaluate intelligence in accordance with policy, disseminating as appropriate considering any security of information implications.
• Prepare reports and assessments and deliver clear presentations where appropriate ensuring that the medium used is suitable for the audience
• Facilitate security, administration and performance of applications, handling and logging errors, monitoring the system, addressing continuous integration and maintaining clean data.
• Work closely with NABIS users to create, maintain and further develop applications and reports.
• To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grading of the post.
Essential Knowledge and Experience:
Desirable Knowledge and Experience:Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Security Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.
Medical: Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.
Hours: This role is a full-time role (36.5 hours) within core working hours of 0800 - 1800.
Location: This role is based in Central Birmingham, with the potential for some UK travel.
