      Natural Resources Intern - PTS

      Position Profile

      Status: Part-time/Temporary/Seasonal (PTS), non-exempt

      Salary: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour depending on qualifications + opportunity for end of the season bonus! $0.50 for every hour worked

      Location: Based out of City Maintenance Facility (15150 Technology Drive Eden Prairie, MN 55344)

      Hours: PT/FT hours available; FT hours (M-F 7am-3:00pm)

      Reporting Relationship: Reports to Forestry & Natural Resources Supervisor

      Park & Natural Resources Division

      The Parks and Natural Resources Division is responsible for providing the citizens and users of the City’s park system with safe, properly maintained, and high quality facilities. The Division is responsible for developing and maintaining the park and open space system with facilities that meet the community needs. Wildlife, forestry and natural resources management are a top priority of this division.

      Position Details

      The duties and responsibilities of the Natural Resources Intern include:

      1. Assist with management of natural areas.
        • Assist in identifying, prioritizing, and performing invasive species removal including herbicide treatments.
        • Assist with planning and implementing restoration projects.
        • Assist with plant surveys.
      2. Assist with noxious weed/tall grass complaints.
        • Inspect, document, and mail notifications.
      3. Maintain records using Field Maps (ArcGIS).
      4. Assist with planning and implementation of environmental volunteer events including tree plantings, invasive species removal, and harvesting native prairie seed.
      5. Aid in Forestry activities including:
        • Maintain newly planted and young trees.
        • Aid in disease tree program on public and private property
        • Maintaining tree inventory

      While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

      Position Requirements

      Education: Working toward completion of a degree in Forestry & Natural Resources Management, Horticulture, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field. Required to have completed a general Botany course or something similar to show ability for plant identification.

      Work Experience : Experience working in an outdoor environment, have working knowledge of trees and plants, and comfortable using herbicides is required. A valid Minnesota Department of Agriculture pesticide applicators license (Categories A, F, and J) is preferred.

      Technical Skills: Proficient user of MS Office (Word, Excel). Prior use and understanding of ArcGIS is preferred, but not required.

      Physical Requirements: This position requires ability to read maps and use compass, work outdoors (may have to work in hot and humid conditions), walking on uneven surfaces and through varied terrain.

      Other Requirements: Must maintain a Minnesota driver’s license. Must obtain a Minnesota Department of Agriculture pesticide applicators license (Categories A, F, and J) applicators license within 1 month of employment.
