      An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trust Grade Doctor in Neurosurgery at The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

      South Tees NHS Trust is one of the largest in the country, comprising of the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. The James Cook University Hospital is a major tertiary and teaching centre with over 1,000 beds, serving a largely urban population. It provides comprehensive regional specialties including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT and Ophthalmic Surgery. It is a regional centre for Spinal Cord Injury, Upper GI and Vascular Surgery. All other major specialties are catered for. The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, serves a population of 120,000 covering 1,000 sq miles of rural North Yorkshire, and provides local medical services for the area. The hospital has recently undergone major re-development.

      Main duties of the job

      Operating Theatre

      There are 18 Neurosurgical lists per week, some of which the successful candidate will be expected to attend. It is expected that they should assist the Consultants with major surgery and will be trained to perform all types of neurosurgical procedure under the close guidance of their Consultants.

      Teaching

      The successful candidate in conjunction with the Higher Specialist Trainees is expected to teach their junior colleagues and nurses at all times. The department also teaches medical students. The appointee will be expected to take part in this teaching activity, particularly bedside teaching in the department.

      Ward Duties

      Most routine work is carried out by the FY2/ST trainees with whom the Trust Grade Doctor should work closely. It is an important part of the post holder's duties to supervise the FY2 Trainees. The Higher Specialist Trainees and Trust Grade Doctors are expected to carry out a daily ward round attended by the 9 ST2/3/FY2 Doctors and the nurse in charge of the ward.

      Study/Research/Audit

      Time spent in the Neurosurgical department is recognised for the requirements of the final FRCS. The study and research days will include responsibility for continuing professional development and appointees will be required to keep a portfolio including operative logbook and performance review. They will be expected to become involved in the collection and presentation of audit and outcome specific data.
