      Here at Te Whatu Ora, a great opportunity has opened for a Newborn Hearing Screener. We are seeking a warm and genuine person, who is looking to step into the world of healthcare. Our Newborn Hearing Screeners are responsible for conducting hearing checks to our newest Southerners, in accordance with the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP).

      Mō te tūranga | About the role

      Receptive to peoples’ needs, you will be comfortable creating a calm screening environment and putting our new families at ease. Each screening day will have a diverse range of duties from meeting families, screening, administration, travel, and working with other health professionals.


      As part of your newborn hearing screening training, you will complete a two-week training programme through the National Screening Unit, so you must be willing to study, travel and be available fulltime during this period. This position provides vocational training immediately and also assists you to obtaining the mandatory NZQA certification as a Newborn Hearing Screening, National Certificate, Community Support Services level 3, which must be completed within 12 months of commencing.       Mōu ake | About you

      As a Newborn Hearing Screener, you will be a reassuring presence for babies and new parents alike, and will need to demonstrate the following to be successful in the role:

      • Have a current, full NZ (class one) driver’s license
      • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a natural empathy for babies and new parents
      • Strong time management skills, with the ability to balance your workload
      • Good written and oral communication skills, as well as being competent in using computer programmes

      You will also need to be comfortable traveling throughout the region to conduct hearing clinics and working independently.

      Utu whānui | Salary range

      This role belongs to the DHB/PSA Allied, Public Health, Scientific & Technical Collective Agreement between step 1 ($52,260 p.a pro-rata) and step 6 ($68,373 p.a. pro-rata) of the Non-Degree Technical Scale.
