Job summary
The Newborn Hearing Screening Service in Ormskirk is looking to recruit an enthusiastic, organised and methodical individual to join our friendly, committed and successful team of newborn hearing screeners.
We are based at Ormskirk District Hospital and offer hearing screening to all babies born in Southport, Formby and West Lancashire. The majority of screening is performed in hospital, but the service does provide outpatient screening at Ormskirk and Southport clinics.
The role involves direct contact with babies for the purposes of screening and demands appropriate communication with parents when imparting screen results and informing of the next stage of the screen. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The service liaises closely with maternity, paediatric audiology and other healthcare services.
Continuing professional development is encouraged and supported.
Newborn Hearing screening is a 365day service including weekend and Bank Holiday work.
Main duties of the job
Identify babies eligible for screening.
Ensure parents are provided with information relevant to all stages of the screening process.
Ensuring parents are aware of all clinical procedures and are able to give informed consent to the screen.
Ensure all equipment and consumables are available immediately prior to screening.
Implement local infection control procedures relevant to the screening process.
Safely handle, position and prepare babies to allow easy access for screening.
Employ accurate hand-eye coordination when using neonatal screening equipment and when preparing babies for the screen.
Maintain a high level of concentration to ensure room, baby and equipment conditions remain optimal throughout the screening process.
Accurately record and upload test data in accordance with local protocols.
Communicate unwelcome/unexpected news sensitively. Manage upset and distressed mothers/parents and provide reassurance while giving accurate information regarding the screening outcome and next steps.
Refer clinical decisions outside own scope of work to Hearing Screening Local Manager.
Ensure parents are informed in writing of the screen outcome.
Clean equipment following screen in accordance with local policy.
Dispose of single use items in accordance with Trust policies.
Perform visual check of patient ear(s) and identify contraindications to screening and take appropriate action

All qualified screeners will be expected to engage in annual screener competency assessment, educational programmes and training alongside continuous professional development opportunities in accordance with local and national recommendations.
All qualified screeners will be expected to accurately follow the screening pathways for well babies and NICU babies.
Accurately identify and refer those babies requiring targeted follow-up or diagnostic assessment.
Monitor new-borns state of arousal during screen and ensure environmental and equipment factors are appropriate throughout the screening process.
Use test equipment to check probe tip placement to promote optimal recording conditions.
Use appropriate skin preparation materials and technique prior to sensor placement.
Insert probe tip safely and securely into ear canal without causing distress to baby or parents.
