News Intern
Job Summary: A news intern focuses on local coverage of news and features by developing and executing story ideas or taking assignments from editors. The intern plans and conducts interviews with sources and develop drafts of stories on a variety of deadlines. Coverage will include some government body meetings (Supervisors, City Council and School Board) but will also include coverage of events and people of interest. Additionally, interns will produce occasional agenda-setting journalism by looking into stories on an in-depth basis. Occasional photo or video work is possible.
Job Responsibilities:
• Prepares concise and clearly written stories that are fair and accurate.
• Meets deadlines.
• Files spot news reports for digital first platforms following guidelines set forth in spot news plan.
• Acts as a breaking news first responder for all platforms.
• Inputs stories in correct format to meet the needs of multiple platforms.
• Stays informed of news and events in coverage area.
• Reads newspapers, wire and online reports and is an active news consumer aware of local news.
• Follows up on assigned stories when appropriate. Files information on upcoming news items with assignment desk.
• Maintains confidentiality of information and sources.
• Consults with supervisor regularly to review story assignments, workflow and workload.
• Adheres to standard of excellence set forth in Gazette Communications policies.
• Works solo when appropriate to deliver text, photos, video and other multimedia elements for various platforms in a timely manner.
• Collaborates with reporters and photojournalists to gather elements for stories. Follows up on reports from previous news day.
Minimum Requirements: Enrolled in journalism or a related field at a college or university. Applicants may also be recent college graduates. Must be company insurable with a satisfactory driving record. Each candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
The Gazette follows a hybrid work model, so interns don't have to be in the newsroom every day (it's a 50/50 office-home model). The pre-employment drug screen will be run closer to the internship start date
