      Job Description Summary:

      UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for the NRIT Software Engineer I role. This position will work as an NCAR Research IT (NRIT) Web Engineering group member and be responsible for developing and maintaining web-based applications and services supporting NCAR’s research mission. In collaboration with team members, and under direct supervision, the NRIT Software Engineer I will participate in the full software lifecycle including system analysis and design, documentation and support, debugging, testing, deploying, and development of original software components.
      This position can be fully remote or hybrid (a mix of remote and in-person).

      What You Will Do

      Here is a summary of what is generally expected of this role.

      Key Responsibilities

      Collaborative Software Development & Maintenance

      • Participate as a developer for a small team that designs, implements, tests, documents, and maintains web applications, websites, and web services.

      • Collaborate primarily with team members and occasionally end users.

      • Gather requirements, design software components, develop and debug code, and create documentation.

      Comprehensive Technical Expertise & Support

      • Serve as a subject matter expert on teams finding solutions to technical problems, conveying technical information, and completing tasks as assigned.

      • Provide basic technical support to technical and non-technical staff on a variety of technical problems of limited scope and complexity, interacting with the NCAR user community to debug software and assure quality and reliability.

      • Participate in projects to support the needs defined by NCAR Research IT groups to provide web-based functionality to various services in support of the NCAR research services environment.


      Who We'd Love To Join Our Team

      Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:

      Education & Experience

      • Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field;

        • Or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience (e.g. Associate’s degree and 4 years of professional experience).

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

      • Basic skill programming using PHP, Python, or Perl, or other scripting language suitable for the web as well as with implementing user-friendly, web-based, user interfaces.

      • Familiarity with:

        • SQL and querying relational databases,

        • Unix-like shell commands,

        • Front-end technologies such as vanilla JavaScript, CSS and HTML, and

        • Related software such as IDEs, build tools (e.g., SASS, rake), and issue trackers (e.g., Jira).

      • Basic knowledge of Git version control.

      • Ability to convey technical information in a clear and understandable manner.

      • Ability to evaluate, interpret, and debug software systems with interacting components.

      • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
