Plan/BU: RC062Position Statement: The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is seeking to hire Nuclear Safety Health Physics Technician I. This position conducts the collection of environmental samples of various media in the environs of nuclear generating stations, licensed facilities and contaminated or potentially contaminated sites throughout the State. The position also conducts inspection and escort of certain types of radioactive materials and conducts radiological response operations. Job Responsibilities
1. Plans, develops, trains, and implements programs to assure the safety of the public from the potential hazards associated with releases of radioactive material during radiological events:
• Assists with the development, maintenance, and training of plans, procedures, and programs that assure effective emergency response to a radiological incident.
• Travels the state to conduct training on plans and procedures for emergency response to a radiological incident.2. Performs technical level and professional duties which require the application of routine health physics procedures and principals:
• Utilizes radiation detection instrumentation to perform radiation surveys associated with radiological response.
• Utilizes environmental sampling equipment to collect potentially contaminated and/or contaminated environmental samples.
• Participates in the implementation of radiological monitoring programs and evaluates data.3. Assists in maintenance, repair, and calibration of equipment including all radiation detection and measurement equipment and personal protective equipment:
• Participates in conceiving, planning, and developing criteria and tests of new equipment.• Performs duties associated with receipt and tracking of instrumentation sent for repair and/or calibration.
• Maintains program database for inventory, performs operational checks, and schedules calibration of equipment.4. Conducts and coordinates maintenance, repair and inspections of vehicles and trailers operated by the division:
• Performs weekly, monthly and quarterly safety inspections.
• Operates Class A-D vehicles.
• Travels throughout the State in performance of duties.5. Performs the assigned duties for the Radiological Task Force and remains available for callback during emergency conditions.
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties described above.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of a Bachelor Degree with major course work in physics, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and preferably including course work in nuclear sciences.
2. Requires one (1) year of professional experience in the practice of health physics, radiochemistry, environmental safety, or a related field.Preferred Qualifications
1. One (1) year of experience working with ionizing radiation, the physical and chemical properties of radioisotopes, and the biological and physical effects of radiation.
2. One (1) year of experience working with applicable radiation protection standards, familiarity with radiation measuring equipment, radiochemistry, and environmental monitoring methods.
3. One (1) year of experience understanding and applying rules, regulations, survey procedures, and sample collection procedures.
4. One (1) year of experience in environmental sampling, sample submittal, and laboratory processes.
5 OHSA Hazwoper certification at the technician level in both general site worker and emergency response.Conditions of Employment
1. A criminal history check through the Illinois State Police. 2. Ability to use state-supplied equipment such as cell phone, laptop, etc.
3. Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
4. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
5. Ability to become Hazwoper certified at the technician level in both general site worker and emergency response.
6. This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.Work Hours: 8:00a - 4:30p Monday - Friday
