      About the Position: This position is located within Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) in the Directorate of Medicine Department of Nephrology Service in Honolulu, Hawaii.

      Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery devices.

      Duties


      • Provide instructions in end-stage renal disease and blood pressure control to appropriate patients in the Nephrology Clinic, as requested by Nephrology physicians.
      • Write, evaluate, and revise dialysis training and procedure manuals and other education materials.
      • Develop patient education programs, audiovisual teaching aids and individualizes the teaching programs to each patient.
      • Reduce the number of hospital admissions of each renal patient in acute crisis due to lack of understanding of their disease process and its management.
      • Make appropriate referrals to support services such as Diet Therapy, Social Work, Medicare, etc. Prepares patients for dialysis.
      • Serve as a nurse in the Renal Dialysis Unit, providing highly specialize nursing care in the fields of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
      • Evaluate patient’s needs and makes condition and needs assessments and initiates/modifies selected therapies as indicated by patient's condition.

      Requirements


      • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
      • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
      • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
      • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
      • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
      • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
      • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
      • This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
      • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
      • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
      • Must obtain and maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training and certification from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network.
      • Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
      • Must obtain and maintain Dialysis certifications.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.       Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical/Emergency):

      Degree: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).

      Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

      Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

      EXEMPTION: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017, or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

      In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

      Education/Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or above) which includes 1) Providing comprehensive professional nursing care to critically ill patients requiring renal replacement therapies; 2) Updating electronic health records; and 3) Providing patient and staff education regarding dialysis procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

      OR

      Education: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field.

      EXEMPTION: You are exempt from the qualification requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017, or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet one of the requirements below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

      Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) from a professional nursing program.

      OR

      3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education from a professional nursing program.
