      Job Description:

      Nursing is a practice discipline that requires a balance between theoretical knowledge and application. The Baptist Health Lexington Nursing Department believes that education is a joint effort based on a structured relationship between an accredited nursing program and a clinical institution. To meet that responsibility, Baptist Health Lexington and Eastern Kentucky University have collaboratively developed a structured experience, the “SPICEE” Program. The goal of this program is to provide students with opportunity to function within the profession, gain security, knowledge and a realistic view of healthcare in the hospital setting.

      This program is designed to provide a quality summer clinical experience as well as college credit. This serves the purpose of recruiting future nurses for this institution as well as providing clinical opportunities for students with a non-faculty preceptor.

      Goals: The “SPICEE” program was designed to assist the student nurse to:

      • Begin to make the transition from student to profession nurse.
      • Gain socialization skills.
      • Gain knowledge and a realistic view of healthcare in the hospital setting.
      • Increase ability to set priorities, make decisions, and implement nursing care for an average patient assignment.
      • Participate in collaborative sharing of ideas between staff and student nurse. Be motivated to return to Baptist Health Lexington as a professional staff nurse.
      • Obtain college credit for completion of the 10-week course.

      OBJECTIVES: After working as a student nurse for ten weeks, the student nurse should be able to:

      • Identify roles and responsibilities of the RN Demonstrate increased proficiency in clinical and in technical skills under supervision.
      • Utilize hospital policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines.
      • Demonstrate the ability to document.
      • Give accurate and inclusive end of shift report.

      QUALIFICATION

      • Applicant must be a student in an accredited school of nursing.
      • Two (2) student faculty Evaluation forms completed by two clinical faculty instructors (one from recent instructor of 4 or more weeks).
      • Associate degree students and Baccalaureate students must be senior level nursing student meeting the minimum qualifications of the job description.
      • Applicant must be approved by school as a qualified candidate for the “SPICEE” program (i.e. validation of good standing).

      PROGRAM CONTENT:

      • Qualified applicants will be chosen after a review of the application packet and an interview with the representatives form Educational Development and Human Resources. Classroom time will be kept to a minimum and used to introduce the student to nursing policies, hospital structure and safety precautions. Each student will be assigned to an experienced nurse who functions as a preceptor. She/he functions as a professional role model, supervisor, and facilitator with whom a professional relationship can be built. Preceptors are chosen by the unit manager based on their proven ability to socialize new members into the profession, their excellent contributions to quality patient care and demonstration of sills and professionalism. Each student nurse’s work rotation will be the same as the preceptor. The preceptor is giving the “SPICEE’s” profile and checklist to optimize clinical expectations and experience.
      • The student nurse will work collaboratively with the preceptor. The preceptor is ultimately responsible for the delivery of comprehensive patient care, planning multidisciplinary care and transcription of physician orders.
