Enters all Head Start student screening data in the ChildPlus database.
    • Assists Head Start staff in obtaining physical exam, lab results, dental exam and follow up documentation for each Head Start student.
    • Monitors and provides direct services and care to students maintaining accountability for all care and services provided. Administers medications to students according to district guidelines, as needed.
    • Documents thoroughly all nursing assessments and care provided and maintains complete and confidential Student Health Records.
    • Identifies and implements appropriate interventions to address physical and emotional health needs of Head Start students. Responds to students in crisis and provides appropriate counseling, care and referrals.
    • Provides and evaluates outcomes of direct and skilled nursing care services and procedures for medically fragile students, integrating the medically fragile student safely into the school setting.
    • Encourages students to adopt healthy lifestyles and self-responsibility by promoting wellness through student and parent education. Contacts parents regarding issues identified during screenings.
    • Provides consultation to school administrators in crisis/emergency situations. Reports potential health and safety hazards to the campus principal, Head Start Director, and nursing supervisor.
    • Collaborates with Head Start staff regarding communicable diseases, infection control, health and safety matters and implementation of health-related plans on Individualized Health Plans (IHPs).
    • Responsible for the care and well-being of Head Start students and others with bloodborne pathogens and for the establishment of universal precautions and confidentiality guidelines.
    • Provides direct instruction to students in health related content areas using curriculum resources such as, “Beary.”. Communicates with parents about health issues through lessons and monthly newsletters.
    • Develops and provides in-service for Head Start staff on health related matters, i.e. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), hepatitis, seizures, bloodborne pathogens, child abuse, diabetes care and use of the automated external defibrillator (AED) as needed. Ensures that all Head Start staff complete annual screening forms and that new staff receive a physical examination from a physician.
    • Provides anti-victimization instruction for the young child, acting as a resource for child abuse/neglect identification and prevention.
    • Serves as a health advocate for students. Assists parents in finding a medical/dental home.
    • Reviews, evaluates and maintains Head Start student immunization records and follows district guidelines and state laws. Enters Head Start student immunization records into the ChildPlus database.
    • Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory health screening programs and make referrals as necessary.
    • Develops and implements individualized health care plans for medically fragile students and as needed for other students with special health concerns.
    • Develops and implements emergency health plans on identified students. Communicates regularly with principal, student health services coordinator, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services and other staff retarding health service issues.
    • Accountable for all Head Start assessments, judgments and referrals in the health of students including child abuse and mental health areas.
    • Oversees and monitors all Head Start student health records and delivery of school health programs on campus as mandated by State Law and District Policy maintaining confidentiality in all written records and verbal interactions with parents, students, faculty and staff.
    • Provides health care and consultation to Head Start employees in collaboration with the Departments of Risk Management and Safe and Healthy Schools.
    • Maintains adequate inventory of medical supplies, equipment to provide efficient assessments and prompt effective management of Head Start students, faculty/staff and visitor illnesses or injuries.
    • Serves as community liaison and resource to parents and community in the development of community and school linked services (i.e. health fairs, resources for parents and students to access needed health care) and resources for students.
    • Participates in professional development and other activities as directed by the Coordinator of Student Health Services, Head Start Program Manager and as mandated by the Texas Nursing Practice Act to maintain professional nursing skills and knowledge.
    • Endeavors to assure that the Head Start program is in compliance with all Head Start health related regulations. Communicates changes in Head Start health standards to campus nurses, Health Services Coordinator, and Head Start staff.

      Primary Purpose:
