- Will work closely with the Inpatient Gastroenterology Consult Service attending physician(s), GI fellows, other GI APPs, nurses and the entire gastroenterology team as needed to coordinate care.
- Manage consultation and follow up patients independently and in collaboration with the attending physician and fellows.
- Perform patient histories, physical exams and then render recommendations to the requesting provider/team. Discuss findings with the attending physician as needed.
- Document GI consultation/follow up notes in EPIC medical record, along with billing for care provided.
- Will carry the Service pager and triage all incoming consults/pages and work with attending as needed to triage and appropriately distribute consults to the team.
- Will act as a liaison for the team with the Endoscopy Unit to ensure patients get adequately prepped for procedures and brought to Endoscopy.
- May act as the Gastroenterology liaison to the Emergency Department to see urgent consult requests to facilitate admission, and also to facilitate triage to the Endoscopy unit or set up outpatient appointment if GI care can be deferred to outpatient setting.
- Coordinates patient care among GI Surgery, Interventional Radiology, GI Oncology, GI Endoscopy Unit, and floor teams including interns, residents, APPs, and medical students along with inpatient nursing.
- Assists with providing specific discharge instructions pertaining to continued outpatient GI management and care to the inpatient discharging team.
- Ensures patient has follow-up in the outpatient GI clinic post discharge.
- Identifies and resolves any quality gaps in care delivery and other care delivery problems and makes recommendations to improve and streamline services.
- May participate in the development of formal and informal educational programs for the Service.
- Other duties as determined by the Clinical Chief of Gastroenterology and the Inpatient Director of Gastroenterology.
- Acts as a resource to other care providers with questions about patients admitted to the Gastroenterology Inpatient Service.
- Participates as requested in MGH and Mass General Brigham quality initiatives.
- Participates in various hospital and system committees as assigned.
- Attends internal (e.g. GI Grand Rounds) and external education meetings and reads appropriate professional journals to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence. Is encouraged to advance their medical and technical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.
- Maintains CME requirements for licensure/renewal and board re-certification.
- Master’s degree (nurse practitioner; physician assistant) from an accredited university.
- Attain and maintain board certification by appropriate NP or PA organization.
- Maintain requirements for DEA and MCSR licensure/renewal.
- 2 years’ experience as an APP is desired. Applicants with GI experience (inpatient or outpatient) preferred.
- Motivated individual with excellent communication skills who has a consistent record of working with large, complex, diverse healthcare teams.
- Excellent teammate who works in a collaborative manner with all providers and staff.
- Willing to adapt to change and be flexible in the setting a very complex patient population.
- This position is on-site 5 days per week (Monday-Friday); no holidays, weekends or nights.
- Time Management: exceptional organizational skills and ability to prioritize effectively and complete tasks; flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures.
- Interpersonal/communication: excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and public speaking skills; excellent command of English language, including medical and scientific terminology.
- Information Systems/Technology Skills: computer skills (including operating systems, word processing, electronic mail, Internet, and other office management systems).
- EPIC experience is a plus.
- Quality Assurance: skills to work efficiently and optimally and strive to do so in all aspects of position; attention to detail.

Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work collaboratively with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) gastroenterology fellows and attending physician(s) of the Inpatient Gastroenterology Consult Service. This role will focus on caring for the hospitalized patients with a variety of GI conditions, including GI bleeds, pancreatitis, GERD, abdominal pain, GI motility disorders and inflammatory bowel disease.
The Gastroenterology APP will provide consultative expertise to requesting providers on primary medical/surgical teams for patients admitted to any inpatient unit throughout MGH. The APP will continue to follow the patient throughout the admission as deemed necessary and assist the primary team with input on adjustments to the care plan. The APP will assist with the scheduling of outpatient GI follow up care as needed.
