      The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a Nurse Supervisor to join the team at the Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI). This is a full-time HHS position with opportunity for advancement, growth, and development.

      This position is eligible for a $5,000 retention payment for every 6 months of commitment. Speak to the hiring manager for more eligibility information.

      The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for directing and supervising assigned employees including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Resident Treatment Workers. The Nurse Supervisor will participate in various committees and leadership roles at the hospital and reports directly to the Administrator of Nursing.

      The successful candidate for the Nurse Supervisor position will have experience and an understanding of the following:
      • Compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and other applicable standards and regulations.
      • Team building and leadership.
      • Patient advocacy.
      • Critical thinking.
      • Policy development and implementation.
      • Performance improvement.
      • Staff development.
      • Coaching, counseling, and discipline of subordinate employees.
      • Performance evaluation.
      IMHI provides inpatient treatment and acute psychiatric services. The facility offers several services including individualized treatment plans and support for adult, child, and adolescent patients. Individuals are encouraged to collaborate with staff members in formulating their own plan. Medication, group counseling, and activities therapies might be included as well.

      Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

      1) All of the following (a, b, and c):

      a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and

      b. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing; and

      c. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability.

      2) All of the following (a and b):

      a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and

      b. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in nursing.

      3) All of the following (a, b, and c):

      a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and

      b. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability; and

      c. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part b), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in nursing equals one year of full-time experience.
