      Job summary

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow ST5+ post in Oculoplastics at the Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, starting January 2025 until January 2026.

The Sussex Eye Hospital within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist eye hospital and the main training hub of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery/School of Ophthalmology. We serve a population of approximately 750,000, through the hub at the Sussex Eye Hospital and the spoke unit at Princes Royal Hospital (with oculoplastic work at both sites). It is a tertiary referral unit for oculoplastics with orbital, lacrimal, paediatric and complex eyelid cases being referred from a wider population of around 1.5 million.

The oculoplastics fellowship is an intensive fellowship, under the supervision of Mr Saul Rajak, Mr Huw Oliphant and Miss Valerie Juniat. The fellow will have supervised and independent operating (according to experience), and the opportunity to conduct multidisciplinary surgery with other specialities such as ENT and neurosurgery. The fellowship has a strong research component and the post-holder is expected to take an active role in ongoing and new research studies, and clinical and surgical improvement projects.

      Main duties of the job

The fellowship is under the direction of Mr Saul Rajak, Mr Huw Oliphant and Miss Valerie Juniat. The oculoplastics fellow can expect to receive comprehensive training in eyelid, lacrimal (endoscopic and external) and orbital surgery, as the department has a high throughput of routine and complex eyelid, lacrimal and orbital cases and a regional referral centre for these subspecialties. The time-table will include the following sessions:

      • 3-4 theatre sessions (2-3 consultant led, 1 independent and once monthly joint ENT endoscopic lacrimal and orbital list)
      • 3 oculoplastic clinics
      • 1 eye casualty
      • 1 departmental teaching session
      • 1-2 supporting professional activity sessions

There will also be the opportunity to obtain exposure to paediatric oculoplastics, joint neurosurgery and head and neck cases. The fellow will also be expected to be a part of the rota for teaching medical students.

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
