JOB SUMMARY & PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS
REPORTS TO: Supervisor - Security
DEPARTMENT NAME: Office of School Security
JOB SUMMARY (2-3 sentences): Protects students, staff, and visitors from harm, and to prevent theft, vandalism, and destruction of school board properties and assets.
PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: List, in the order of time spent, the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required:
Job Responsibility 1:
Patrols school properties to prevent, discover, and report burglaries, trespass, vandalism, thefts, arsons, and other unlawful activities on school property, and to identify, report, and correct security violations.
Job Responsibility 2:
Responds to calls and complaints received from burglar and fire alarm dispatchers, school personnel, and citizens regarding unsafe conditions or illegal activity on school properties.
Job Responsibility 3:
Develops facts and makes them available in report form to supervisory personnel and appropriate agencies.
Job Responsibility 4:
Deals effectively and maintains good relations with school personnel, students, parents, and law enforcement representatives.
Job Responsibility 5:
Takes appropriate actions and carries out assignments intended to protect students, staff, visitors, and school properties.
Job Responsibility 6:
Investigates unusual conditions; takes immediate action when leaks or malfunctions in plumbing, electrical, heating, or other equipment are detected to reduce danger and prevent possible damage; notifies proper persons or agencies regarding impaired equipment; and takes appropriate emergency action.
Job Responsibility 7:
Knowledgeable and skilled in conducting searches of individuals and their possessions, including the use of hand-held and walk-thru metal detectors.
Job Responsibility 8:
Prosecutes on behalf of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education criminal activity on school board property and testifies in court actions resulting from criminal activity committed on school board property.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES, REQUIREMENTS, AND IMPACTS
DATA RESPONSIBILITY: “Data Responsibility” refers to information, knowledge, and conceptions obtained by observation, investigation, interpretation, visualization, and mental creation. Data are intangible and include numbers, words, symbols, ideas, concepts, and oral verbalizations.

ASSETS RESPONSIBILITY: “Assets Responsibility” refers to the responsibility for achieving economies or preventing loss within the organization.
Responsible for assets with large values, such as security vehicles, radios and other equipment used in the performance of their duties.
MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: “Mathematics” deals with quantities, magnitudes, and forms and their relationships and attributes by the use of numbers and symbols.
Uses addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may compute ratios, rates, and percentages.
COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: “Communications” involves the ability to read, write, and speak.
Reads routine sentences or instructions; writes routine sentences and completes routine work forms; speaks routine sentences using standard grammar.
COMPLEXITY OF WORK: “Complexity of Work” addresses the analysis, initiative, ingenuity, creativity, and concentration required by the position and the presence of any unusual pressures.
Performs work involving the application of logical principles and thinking to solve practical problems within or applying to a unit or division of the organization; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results and frequent exposure to unusual pressure.
IMPACT OF DECISIONS: “Impact of Decisions” refers to consequences such as damage to property, loss of data or property, exposure of the organization to legal liability, or injury or death to individuals.
Makes decisions with serious impact - affects most units in organization, and may affect citizens.
EQUIPMENT USAGE: “Equipment Usage” refers to inanimate objects such as substances, materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, or products. A thing is tangible and has shape, form, and other physical characteristics.
Handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving little or no latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items.
SAFETY OF OTHERS: “Safety of Others” refers to the responsibility for other people’s safety, either inherent in the job or to assure the safety of the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: “Education Requirements” refers to job specific training and education required for entry into the position.
High school diploma or GED. Associates’ degree in police science or criminal justice is preferred.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: “Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations” refers to professional, state, or federal licenses, certifications, or registrations required to enter the position.
Requires a valid Tennessee Drivers’ License.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: “Experience Requirements” refers to the amount of work experience that is required for entry into the position that would result in reasonable expectation that the person can perform the tasks required by the position.
Three (3) years’ applicable work experience.

Requires light to medium work involving standing or walking for long periods of time.

This position is exposed to extreme heat/cold, wet or humid conditions, dust or pollen, violence, and vehicular traffic.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and speaking.
