Doctoral Candidate (DC) position in Horizon Europe MSCA project NESTOR "Next generation high-speed optical networks for metro access"
Coriant R&D GmbH ( Infinera ) is looking for a n excellent intern professional with a master’s degree in electrical engineering , or computer science , or physics to join our growing Strategic Architecture Engineering Team in Munich as a PhD student .
The PhD program i s part of the Doctoral Network NESTOR funded by the European Commission and it will be carried out at Infinera in Munich. As part of the training, t he student will also take a secondment at VPI Photonics in Berlin . The Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, will award the PhD .
The Marie Skłodowska -Curie Actions NESTOR includes the following partners : Infinera Portugal (co ordinator) , Politecnico di Torino (Italy) , Technical University of Eindhoven (the Netherlands) , Universitat Politecnica De Catalunya (Spain) , Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento S ant ’Anna (Italy) , Orange (France) , British Telecommunications (UK) , Sm Optics (Italy), V PI photonics (Germany) , Instituto Universitário De Lisboa (Portugal) , Ericsson Telecomunicazion i (Italy), and Aston University (UK) .
The topic of the PhD program will be on “ Low-complexity DSP techniques for metro-access networks ” . The candidate will work on simplified digital signal processing (DSP) techniques with the aim to improve both the system level performance and the energy efficiency of the processing stages . The algorithms will be tailored to be used in network scenario s such as beyond 5G / 6G for x-haul and metro-aggregation networks , where the co-existence between next generation coherent transceivers with legacy IM-DD channels will be mandatory .
The main objectives of the PhD program will be:
Characterization of the use cases in terms of physical layer and traffic scenarios, component s, fibre infrastructure (including linear and nonlinear fibre propagation ) to craft and simplify DSP algorithms . Front-haul function al splits on the DSP tasks will be considered as well ;
Investigation of digital signal processing algorithms – including nonlinear compensation techniques – to reduce the impact of distortion s .
Investigation of simplification strategies to reduce complexity, and consequently the power consumption , of the DSP algorithms ;
Test the developed algorithms in lab experiments.
The student will be co- supervised by Dr. Pablo Torres - Ferrera ( Infinera ) , Dr. Antonio Napoli (Infinera) , and Prof. Josep Prat ( UPC ).
