What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The hourly range for this position is $25.57 - $38.36. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can generally expect to work 3 days in Office and 2 days at home, but you may be called into court and should be ready to remain flexible. This position is also expected to work on at least one weekend day, as this position supports our in-custody arraignment court seven days per week. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

In this position you can expect to work on site at Wellington Webb Municipal Building, 201 W Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80202.

The City and County of Denver, City Attorney's Office, Prosecution and Code Enforcement section (PACE) is seeking a Victim Advocate to join our team. The PACE leads with integrity, compassion, and commitment and works together with the community to improve the quality of life in Denver and, in that vein, this victim advocate will work with victims of municipal crimes and be responsible for providing victims of all ages with the support, referrals, and resources they need during all stages of the criminal justice process.

Specifically, as the PACE Victim Advocate of City Attorney’s Office, you will:

• Respond to crisis calls, provides information on the criminal justice process: The Victim Advocate will accompany victims to court, assist with obtaining protection orders, answers questions about court cases, offer safety planning, provide referrals to community resources, and staff cases with the prosecutorial team. This victim advocate will work with victims on in-custody cases (typically assaults, domestic violence, and family violence cases). This victim advocate will screen cases, conduct risk and lethality assessments, and contact victims to provide safety planning, an explanation of the criminal justice system – both municipal and state, provide community referrals, provide emergency resources (housing, food, transportation, child care), and help with restitution and Victims Compensation funds.

• Contact crime victims by phone or mail to explain victim rights, provide information and answer questions about the criminal process, provide victim impact statements, review police reports and photographs, assess risk and lethality factors, consult with the prosecuting attorney, and provide safety planning.

• Appear at in-custody arraignment hearings to provide support, offer emotional support and procedural review for the victim and witnesses, and liaison with the court and prosecution team.

• Assess victim needs, make referrals and collaborate with community service organizations.

• Coordinate appearance of victim and/or witnesses with courtroom schedule and availability of prosecution team.

• Coordinate and schedule meetings with victims and prosecution staff.

• Maintain contact with victims to keep them updated on case status, and assists victim with such things as translator services, therapy referral, transportation arrangements to and from court, protective orders, emergency funds, and temporary housing/shelter programs.

• Ensure services to clients are in compliance with Colorado Victim Rights Act.

• Prepare all necessary paperwork for court appearance, including No-Contact Orders and Firearm Relinquishments.

• Explain victim compensation funds and restitution options available to victims.

• Attend meetings with community and collaborative partners as requested.

• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

• At least two (2) years of paid or volunteer human services experience providing casework, case management or trauma services to the victims of violent or non-violent crimes. This position requires handling emergency or crisis situations, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and computer use. The position is subject to varying and unpredictable situation, is subject to many interruptions such as multiple calls and inquiries

• Will bring a victim-centered, collaborative approach to the position and will work well with individuals of all ages and all walks of life. A competent, confident, relaxed yet professional attitude and demeanor are critical in this environment

• Contact crime victims by phone or mail to explain victim rights, provide information and answer questions about the criminal process, provide victim impact statements, review police reports, assess risk factors, and provide safety planning

• Appear at trials and at hearings in an information/mediation role to provide support, offer emotional support and procedural review for the victim and witnesses, and liaison with the court and prosecution team

• Assess victim needs, make referrals, and collaborate with community service organizations

• Coordinate appearance of victim and/or witnesses with courtroom schedule and availability of prosecution team

• Coordinate and schedules meetings with victims and prosecution staff

• Maintain contact with victims to keep them updated on case status, and assists victim with such things as translator services, therapy referral, transportation arrangements to and from court, protective orders, emergency funds, and temporary housing/shelter programs

• Ensure services to clients are in compliance with Colorado Victims’ Rights Act

• Prepares all necessary paperwork for the disposition of court

• Explain victim compensation funds and restitution options available to victims

• Attend meetings with community partners as requested

• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested

About You

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, or related field

• Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of paid or volunteer human services experience providing casework, case management or trauma services to the victims of violent or non-violent crimes

• Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post high school education

• Licensure: None
