  Packaging Design Engineer

This company delivers end-to-end services that include design, manufacturing, and worldwide distribution to ensure products arrive safely and efficiently.

  Primary Function:

  The Packaging Design Engineer is responsible for defining and developing packaging designs and specifications that meet product requirements, ensuring protection, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Responsibilities include creating 3D models, 2D drawings, assemblies, calculations, Bill of Material (BOM) creation, customer site visits, updating designs and documentation, and supporting junior engineers.

  Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop standard and non-standard packaging solutions, including detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks or NX.
  • Interpret technical documentation, sketches, and 3D models to develop comprehensive 2D drawings.
  • Collaborate with customers to understand design requirements and gather feedback.
  • Document interactions and feedback for future design iterations.
  • Select appropriate mechanical or packaging components based on performance, cost, and manufacturing considerations.
  • Create or update packaging specifications, including materials and tolerances, to optimize manufacturing and costs.
  • Review CAD designs with customers' packaging engineering departments to ensure requirements are met.
  • Develop and update BOMs and technical documentation.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews, providing technical recommendations.
  • Perform packaging testing, validation, and structural analysis.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of designs, analyses, and changes.
  • Evaluate design alternatives and propose improvements.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and performance enhancement.
  • Guide and support junior engineers.
  • Continuously develop engineering skills and knowledge.
  • Follow company policies on data security.

  Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Packaging Engineering.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in mechanical or structural design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, SolidWorks and NX.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience with packaging design, testing, and standards (ISO, Mil-spec, ASTM, ISTA).
  • Understanding of protective packaging materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to measure accurately with tools like tape measures, calipers, and scales.
  • Experience with CNC programming and ArtiosCAD is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and team-focused.
  • Ability to pass background checks and comply with ITAR and vaccination requirements.

  Work Environment:

  Standard office environment with occasional testing and validation activities. Travel may be required to facilities, clients, or suppliers.
