      If you are a PACKAGING ENGINEERING OR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENT looking for an opportunity to grow, Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you based in our Rockford, IL location!

      General Summary:

      This opportunity is perfect for a student currently enrolled in a Packaging Engineering or related program such as Mechanical Engineering with a strong interest in the design and development of protective packaging containers, product packaging and retail displays. Expand your technical and professional skills in a real-world setting. Learn to analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for container. Consults with purchasing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging. Develop CAD representation of assorted types of product packaging (cartons, clamshells, blister cards and others) used to ship professional grade tools while protecting products during transportation. Investigate innovations in packaging materials and utilization of sealing and fastening devices.

      AS A PACKAGING ENGINEERING CO-OP, YOU WILL:
      • Develop new packaging systems and/or improve existing packaging systems to meet standards of quality, function, cost and merchandising using established and well-defined engineering procedures using Solid Works CAD software.
      • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics, special handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for the packaging system.
      • Provide original, innovative, and creative packaging solutions incorporating necessary theft and tamper deterrents.
      • Perform detailed or routine engineering, including maintaining bill of materials, and Engineering Change Notices (ECN).
      • Perform or request appropriate packaging test procedures.
      • Conduct necessary tests of new or improved packages and packaging materials while complying with various ergonomic requirements or guidelines.
      • Solicit quotes from suppliers and consults with purchasing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.
      • Define efficient packing procedures, innovations in packing materials, and utilization of sealing and fastening devices for internal and external customers.

      REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
      • Undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
      • Ability to work 40 hours/week during the scheduled semester
      • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
      • Sophomore or higher class status
      • Experience working in a manufacturing environment is a plus
      • Some coursework related to Quality or Engineering is a plus
      • Authorization to work in the United States - Sponsorship will not be provided for these role.

      Mental Requirements:

      • Uses computers frequently; interfaces with the other employees and outside visitors by telephone, mail, electronic mail, and/or in person.

      Physical Requirements:

      • Normally assigned to an office environment; may occasionally be required to be in the factory environment. May be required to occasionally lift 25 to 50 pounds. Is required to wear safety glasses and safety shoes within the factory environment.
      PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

      Undergraduate student currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering

      Able to return for multiple co-op rotations

      Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher

      Demonstrated hands-on mechanical aptitude highly desirable (i.e. auto, lawnmower, go-cart repair, building things, etc.)

      Practical experience with hand or power tools is a definite plus

      Flexible Work Schedule
      This role has the flexibility of a core hour schedule. You can choose to flex your start and stop times given you are working during the core hours of 9:00am - 3:00pm. Our teams work together to ensure our chosen work schedules enable our creativity and productivity as we serve the needs of our customers.

      Location Overview:

      We’re not limited by geographic location. As part of the Professional Tools team, you’ll have the opportunity to work in either Rockford, Illinois or Elyria, Ohio, depending on the position. Both locations offer the charm of a small town with the conveniences of a city. Located in Northeast Ohio about 30 miles from Cleveland, Elyria offers a diverse range of outdoor recreational activities, including boating, fishing, hiking and access to world-class Metroparks and the Lake Erie Shores & Islands. Elyria's low cost of living, excellent schools and proximity to the Great Lakes make it an ideal place to call home! Rockford is located about 1.5 hours from the Chicago metropolitan area. Known as the Forest City, Rockford residents have their pick of natural gardens and arboretums to explore.
