      The Packer Operator is responsible for operating a packer truck to collect yard waste, recyclables, and other waste materials. This role includes driving and operating heavy equipment for seasonal tasks such as street sweeping, snow plowing, and applying salt on icy roads. The operator may work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and must be available for emergency response and varied shifts as required.

      Applications will be screened. Those qualified will be invited to participate in a performance test and an oral interview. Applicants must successfully pass each of the selection processes by 70% or better to proceed in the process.

      1. Operate a packer truck, controlling mechanisms for loading, compressing, and dumping materials from either side of the truck.
      2. Collects yard waste, recyclables, brush and other materials on assigned routes and transports to appropriate disposal facilities.
      3. Perform additional duties including brush pickup, basic labor, street maintenance, and tree trimming.
      4. Operate trailer-mounted equipment such as crack filler, chipper, and air compressor.
      5. Assist in manual tasks such as snow shoveling and clearing debris post-street sweeping.
      6. Utilize a computerized tablet for data entry regarding service details.
      7. Occasionally perform duties of a Heavy Equipment Operator for various seasonal maintenance activities.
      8. Inspects packer truck for proper mechanical functioning.
      9. Cleans truck at the end of each workday.
      10. Consults with supervisor on any route changes or hazardous driving conditions.
      11. Works at the City’s Convenience station as scheduled one (1) Saturday shift per month.

      1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
      2. Valid State of Michigan Class A Commercial Drivers License with an N endorsement required.
      3. Experience in strenuous physical labor and handling heavy/bulky items.
      4. Previous experience with heavy equipment operation preferred.
      5. Knowledge of the City’s street system, with the ability to learn and follow route maps and schedules.
      6. Basic proficiency in data entry on handheld computerized devices.
      1. Must be in good physical condition with ability to lift items weighing up to 70 pounds; occasionally lifts items weighing up to 100 pounds.
      2. Subject to walking, sitting, standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and twisting to perform essential functions.
      3. Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp/wet surfaces, various terrains, and high noise levels.
      4. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials and conditions.
