- Knowledge of relevant voluntary and statutory agencies and their perspectives relating to palliative care.

- Understanding and experience of multi-disciplinary team working.
- Good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, and other relevant legislative frameworks.

- Experience gained in working with adults during student training.
- Experience of working with children and families during student training.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills and to be able to use these effectively in a variety of settings, with individuals and groups, children and adults.
- To be able to undertake a needs led assessment, planning and negotiating skills, to ensure high quality assessment and timely outcomes for people.
- Ability to work effectively in an emotionally stressful environment.
- Ability to be creative and supportive in the role of Palliative Care Social Worker, and appropriately apply a range of social work methods and interventions.
- Able to plan and manage own workload and activities.
- Provide social work advice and support to the multi professional team.
- Able to travel between Hospice and peoples homes, in the West Midlands Area.
- Intermediate IT skills.

Job summary
Birmingham Hospice, formed of Birmingham St Marys and John Taylor Hospices, is committed to improving the quality of life for people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families and loved ones during one of the most challenging periods they will ever face.
Our Palliative Care Social Workers at Birmingham Hospice specialise in working in partnership with patients who require specialist palliative or end-of-life care in addition to supporting their families, those they are close to and their communities. Using their specific skills and knowledge to help people to deal with the impact of a palliative diagnosis, including emotional support, to have a good life and a good death.
You will be responsible for ensuring the provision of a coordinated family support service across both Hospice sites.You will support the senior palliative care social worker to ensure that the service provides high standards of support, to patients, their families, carers, loved ones and communities, helping to influence and enhance best practice in palliative and end-of-life care involving both internal and external professional providers and agencies.You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and be well-versed in Safeguarding, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), a thorough understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, and other relevant legislative frameworks.
Main duties of the job
You will work within the social team to help to provide the assessments and applications for both Social and Fast Track CHC packages of Care to ensure that the highest standards of care and support to our patients and loved ones are provided at the right time.
You will be a registered social worker with Social Work England and hold a full clean driving licence. You will be a sound communicator and will be authentic, open, honest, transparent, and have a track record of working inclusively with a genuine appreciation of the value of diversity.
