      Litigation Paralegal - Office of Counsel

      Occupational Summary


      Duke University and Duke University Health System are seeking a talented paralegal to join our collaborative team in Durham, NC, to support the University’s litigation, subpoena response, and e-discovery portfolio. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and able to work independently, with the skill to develop strong organizational systems and oversee the implementation of those systems. Prior experience managing e-discovery processes is required. The candidate should have experience with various types of litigation including class actions, civil rights, commercial, and/or arbitrations. Familiarity with insurance issues in the litigation process is important.

      Work Performed
      Manage and oversee the implementation of Duke University’s e-discovery protocols and processes.


      Support internal and external litigation counsel in all stages of litigation.


      Assist with the factual development and analysis of cases, including communication with business partners to establish the facts of the case.


      Coordinate on all stages of litigation between the Office of Counsel, other Duke University and DUHS departments and personnel, external litigation counsel and external vendors.


      Manage the discovery process, including the collection, retention, and production of documents, drafting written responses to discovery, and setting up and maintaining document review platforms.


      Serve as a liaison between the Office of Counsel and Risk Management on insurance issues and claims-related inquiries.


      Handle other tasks as assigned, including sending/monitoring preservation notices, responding to subpoenas, and assisting with responding to administrative charges.

      Preferred Qualifications at this Level
      Education/Training
      : Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional experience. Requires broad general knowledge in the legal field.
      Preferred Associate Degree in NC Paralegal Studies and broad general knowledge in the legal field.

      Experience: 3+ years of relevant experience as a paralegal handling litigation matters required, 5+ years preferred

      Skills: Excellent written and verbal skills
      Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of matters in a fast-paced environment
      Understanding of the various stages of the litigation process, including e-discovery
      Strong organizational and analytical skills
      Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently
