Responsibilities
A Paramedic Clinical Extender (PCE) is a professional care provider who shares responsibility and accountability for patients in the emergency department. PCEs work in collaboration with other healthcare providers, under the immediate supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP). The PCE is responsible for providing age-appropriate, culturally, and ethnically sensitive care, while maintaining a safe environment. The PCE participates in the planning, implementation, delivery, and evaluation of healthcare services and tasks. The role of the PCE also includes patient advocacy, reinforcing teaching by the RN, and performance improvement. The position is an integral part of the team approach to patient care and based on the Oregon and/or Washington paramedic scope of practice, performing those tasks that contribute to the smooth and efficient flow of patients through the emergency department.
Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or higher in emergency services or related field preferred.
Experience: At least one (1) year experience in acute care, ambulatory care, emergency care, or emergency medical setting preferred.
Knowledge/Skills: • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally. • Strong interpersonal skills. • Self-directed including the ability to work independently. Effective planning, organizing, and time management skills. • Ability to identify medical emergencies and assist with management.

Licensure
Oregon: Good standing with the Oregon Human Services Department, EMS, and Trauma Division, as a Paramedic/EMT. Washington: Good standing with the Washington State Department of Health, Emergency Medical Systems and Trauma Care
American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric advanced life support, required within six months of hire) also required.
