      Performs professional work planning and supervising the maintenance of city parks, including grounds, facilities, and athletic fields. Conducts supervisory/managerial responsibility in accordance with policies, procedures, and applicable laws. Develops Parks Division annual budget, collaborates with co-sponsors and interest groups in planning and implementing special events.


      This position oversees a team of Parks workers and is focused on the City's Parks including maintenance and upkeep. This position primarily performs the supervisory function of the team and provides leadership and guidance to field staff including work plans, performance evaluation, and overall direction of the division.

      Starting Salary Range: The starting salary is between the minimum and midpoint of the range ($75,233.60 - $92,164.80 annually). Candidates will start at the minimum of the range unless their skills, experience, education or other factors exceed the qualifications for the position.
      • Carries out supervisory/managerial responsibility in accordance with policies, bargaining unit agreements, procedures, and applicable laws, including: interviewing, hiring and training full-time and part-time staff; planning, assigning and directing work; establishing deadlines; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; making pay recommendations; coordinating, developing and approving staff training; approving leave requests; and addressing complaints and resolving problems; meets with vendors; oversees the construction of the project and all the contract personnel involved.
      • Assists in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks related equipment, grounds, natural areas, recreation facilities, playgrounds, equipment, and buildings; oversees parks and municipal complex landscaping and mowing projects and activities.
      • Inspects Park areas and municipal complex for conformance to maintenance and safety standards.
      • Provides planning and logistical support for special events and programs.
      • Assists in the snow removal and ice control operations for the City’s parking lots, recreational trails, city-owned sidewalks, crosswalks, police facility, and City Hall.
      • Assists in the development of the Parks Division annual budget, including reviewing budget expenditures and requesting revisions to meet operational needs; reviewing budget requests and making decisions on organizing projects to remain within budget; and consulting with financial staff regarding budget matters. Submits and approves purchases to meet Parks Division needs.
      • Works in conjunction with the Recreation Superintendent to ensure program goals related to the Parks and Recreation Department are met, facilities are maintained, and logistics for special events are coordinated and implemented.
      • Prepares complex, routine, and non-routine reports utilizing a variety of software; receives, sorts, and summarizes material for the preparation of reports; prepares work reports; relays and interprets administrative decisions, policies, and instructions.
      • Provides emergency on-call responses 24-7.
      ** Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required

      Any combination of education, training and experience as listed below which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position; a typical way to qualify is a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Park Management or related field and two (2) years of progressively related responsible experience and one (1) year of supervisory experience OR two (2) years of experience leading work crews.

      Licensure or Certification Requirements
      • Current and valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract in order to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna.
      • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and Department of Agriculture pesticide applicators license within one (1) year of employment.
      • CDL and Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred.

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      Knowledge of:

      • Methods involved in organizing, planning and supervising parks, irrigation design and construction, landscape, arborist, turf maintenance activities and facilities maintenance activities.
      • Ability to interpret project and architectural plans/drawings; landscape plans.
      • Parks and natural resource management and conservation
      • Safety principals as they apply to construction, heavy equipment, and personal protective equipment.
      • Administration of staff and activities, either directly or through subordinate supervision.
      • Mathematics and accounting as it relates to creating and maintaining a departmental budget, including modern business practices.
      • All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job, including knowledge of IP security cameras and related software.
      • Budget development policies and procedures.
      • Department organization, standard operating guidelines and policies, rules, and regulations.

      Skill in:

      • Planning, organizing, assigning, directing, reviewing and evaluating the work of staff.
      • Communicating orally and in writing with internal staff, citizens, and other departmental staff in order to give and receive information in a courteous manner.
      • Operating and maintaining all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job.

      Ability to: (Mental and Physical Abilities)

      • To develop and execute a well-rounded program of preventative maintenance.
      • To establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, city officials, other government agencies, social agencies and the general public.
      • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; speak and hear; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; reach with hands and arms; ascend and descend stairs, ladders, ramps, scaffolding, etc.; move about on hands and knees; bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; push, pull and/or lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently.
      • Maintains and upgrades professional knowledge, skills, and development by attending seminars and training programs and reading trade and professional journals and publications.
      • Oversees surveillance systems for Park & Recreation Facilities and cooperates with law enforcement when footage is needed for criminal matters
      • Represents the department at various board and committee meetings and provides liaison with other departments on related activities. Responds to citizen complaints or inquiries on division activities or need for service.
      • May serve as backup for other positions within the department.
      • Serves as records officer by assuming responsibility for handling records; knows rules and procedures and acts as liaison with the Records Commission and Records Administrator.
      • Performs other related duties as assigned.

      Working Conditions:

      • Working time may require irregular hours, and/or on call status to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
      • Work is performed in a normal office environment and in the field and warehouse exposing the employee to various outside atmospheric conditions; to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes or the skin; possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools or machinery, electrical shock, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals.
      • The incumbent's working conditions are typically moderately quiet to very loud.
