Review case files, risk assessments, victim impact statements, and other information prior to hearings.
Independently preside over application hearings for parole consideration.
Take support and victim testimony, respecting confidentiality requirements.
Evaluate cases using structured decision-making processes focused on risk to reoffend and public safety.
Set appropriate parole conditions and complete required documentation.
Conduct hearings to determine if parole violations occurred beyond a preponderance of the evidence.
Decide on appropriate sanctions or revocation actions, ensuring all statutory rights and timeframes are met.
Assess eligibility and appoint attorneys for parolees when required by law.
Review revocation appeals for procedural fairness and validity.
Conduct file reviews for cases not requiring in-person hearings.
Participate in full board reviews for complex or high-profile cases.
Conduct rescission, special needs parole, early discharge, probable cause, Juveniles Convicted as Adults Program (JCAP), and warrant hearings as assigned.
Collaborate with all parties (Parole Board, Victim Services Unit, Time & Release, etc.) to improve system efficiency and effectiveness.
Develop guiding/supporting documents and policies.
Participate in Lean, 4DX, and other process improvement initiatives.
Vote in Business Meetings, review and approve Policies & Procedures, minutes, and other required approvals.
Participate in retreats, WIGs, cadence of accountability, and required training.
Participate in committees, task forces, work groups and/or public outreach.
Support onboarding and mentoring of new staff or Parole Board Members.
Undertake assignments as directed by the Chair.
Engage in public speaking.
Per statute you must have experience in law enforcement
Five years of experience in a relevant field with knowledge of:
Parole laws and guidelines
Rehabilitation
Correctional administration
The criminal justice system
Issues associated with victims of crime
Actuarial risk assessment instruments and other offender assessment tools used by the board and the Department of Corrections
A combination of relevant experience and education in all aspects of the criminal justice system is preferred.
Special consideration for higher education, behavioral health, therapeutic experience, special offender programming, community-based offender service expertise, and other clinical, legal, and research-based qualifications.

About the Colorado Parole BoardThe mission of the Colorado Parole Board is to increase public safety by evaluating an individual’s potential for successful reintegration into the community through evidence-informed practices.
The Parole Board is an independent decision-making body whose responsibilities include making release decisions for incarcerated persons, setting conditions of parole, and making revocation decisions for parolees who violate conditions of parole.
Appointment
Colorado Parole Board Members are appointed by the Governor to a three-year term, subject to confirmation by the Colorado State Senate pursuant to the provisions of §17-2-201 (1), C.R.S. This specific opening must be filled by an individual with prior law enforcement experience per statute.
Please note: This position is primarily remote with some in-person meetings as needed.
About the PositionParole Board members review, consider, and decide applications for parole. The board may parole any person who is sentenced or committed to a correctional facility when such person has served their minimum sentence, less time allowed for good behavior, and there is a strong and reasonable probability that the person will not thereafter violate the law and that release is compatible with the welfare of society. Members are expected to participate in board meetings, in-services, and training to remain up-to-date on research and best practices to guide evidence-based decision-making. Members should have experience working on a multi-disciplinary team involving criminal justice and behavioral health components and understand the use of risk assessments in evidence-based decision-making.
