  Summary:

  The Virginian-Pilot & Daily Press is looking for an experienced copy editor to manage our letters to the editor. This is a part-time, remote position with flexible hours.

  What you will do:

  • Prepare a daily file of letters submitted by readers of 600-800 words about current events and local issues

  • Plan your writing to meet daily deadlines, with the flexibility to draft in advance

  • Review and select 3-5 letters daily, representing diverse perspectives

  • Ensure letters are clear, concise, and adhere to style guidelines

  • Fact-check and verify sources to maintain accuracy

  • Manage the flow of incoming letters and dedicate time to process them

  • Engaging with the community by responding to inquiries and address concerns from readers

  • Foster an inclusive environment for diverse voices

  What you will bring:

  • Strong copy editing skills with a keen eye for detail and AP Style

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with the public and colleagues

  • A deep understanding of the importance of the letters to the editor as a platform for reader engagement

  • The ability to work independently and meet deadlines

  • A passion for news and current events, with a focus on local affairs
