      To perform a wide variety of population-based regional cancer registry functions which includes technical duties relating to the quality and integrity of the data from designated cancer reporting facilities and physician offices in the Greater Bay Area. Duties include, but are not limited to, validating the documentation and codes on case reports, consolidating patient and tumor data from multiple reports, accurately linking patient and tumors, reviewing and resolving discrepancies from subsequent records (modified records) submitted by reporting facilities with new and/or corrected information, and reviewing and resolving computer generated data edits.

      The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

      Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

      For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

      • Associate degree in medical records, nursing, biological sciences, Register Health Technical (RHIT) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
      • Experience abstracting in a hospital cancer registry.
      The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (DEB), housed within the UCSF School of Medicine, has a vision to advance discoveries and insights into the distribution, determinants and outcomes of disease that will drive improvements in population health worldwide. The DEB has three missions: 1) education, 2) science, and 3) research. Its educational mission is to train students in epidemiologic and biostatistical methods for studying disease etiology and prevention, evaluating tests and treatments, and using evidence-based approaches in clinical practice and population health. The scientific mission of the DEB is to perform outstanding basic, clinical and population health research along a spectrum from molecules to society and to develop tools for the translation of knowledge that will improve clinical practice and population health and ensure optimal use of resources. The clinical mission of the Department is to support the practice of public health and preventive medicine in local, state, national and international health agencies.

      Housed within the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry is the designated agent of the California Department of Public Health, California Cancer Registry to collect information on cancer and other reportable diseases in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties.
      • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma with a demonstrated knowledge of the applicable medical terminology and four years of related hospital clerical experience (i.e., four years of progressively responsible experience in the medical field processing medical information), three of which must be in the type of work to be performed (i.e., working in a hospital or central cancer registry); or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
      • Knowledgeable about central/regional cancer registry reporting requirements, case finding methodology and abstracting cancer data.
      • Demonstrates strong knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, cancer diagnosis and treatment modalities, cancer disease process, staging schemas, such as SEER Extent of Disease, SEER Summary Stage, Collaborative Staging and AJCC TNM, International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O), SEER Solid Tumor rules and SEER Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm rules.
      • Requires the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
      • Must be detail-oriented and work with a high degree of accuracy.
      • Excellent interpersonal skills.
      • Demonstrates knowledge of cancer registry computer systems and has the ability to work with large amounts of computerized data.
      • Demonstrates ability to take initiative and use good judgment.
      • Must be able to focus and multi-task in busy environment, with the ability to successfully handle potentially stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
      • Must be able to concentrate on details, work under deadline pressures, apply sound logic and judgment, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
      • Maintain confidentiality and security of data at all times.
      • Must be able to establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and tactful working relationships with medical facility, physician office personnel and community cancer registrars.
