      Job Summary

      The Patient Care Technician I (PCT I) is a nursing support role. Individuals with healthcare experience or non-acute care experience will complete a competency based training. After receiving the appropriate orientation and training, individuals will demonstrate the knowledge necessary and act under the direction of a licensed clinician to communicate appropriately, carry out delegated tasks for assigned patient populations, and provide high quality support of patient care and services. This position exercises sound judgment and executes clinical skills commensurate with experience necessary for assisting with patient-care procedures. The PCT I performs basic patient care activities, including but not limited to identifying and responding to abnormal findings, pertinent changes in the patient’s condition reporting such to the nurse immediately, charts observations and activities of daily living (ADL’s) within unit specific defined limits and job scope, and provides assistance with patient elimination, hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and progress activity and practices patient and family centered care.

      Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

      • No prior patient care experience required
      • Completion and demonstration of skills per Competency Based Orientation (CBO) required upon hire and/or promotion.
      • Ability to understand verbal and written instruction and communicate clearly and effectively.
      • Demonstrates learning agility, problem solving, collaboration and teamwork.
      • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills as assigned for designated specialty area/function or assigned procedures.
      • Efficiency in multi-tasking and ability to prioritize simultaneous demands.
      • Ability to perform duties requiring prolonged and/or extensive sitting, standing, and walking.
      • Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff.

      PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

      • Provides direct patient care for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
      • Obtain pre and post treatment vitals, weight and vascular access condition. Report any unusual changes or findings to the nurse.
      • Responsible for timely and accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including vital signs, treatment parameters, and change in condition.
      • Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
      • Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens as prescribed.
      • Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes; follows safety rules; works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors; and participates in organizational departments safety programs; adheres to all MH policies and procedures.
      • Develop knowledge of provision of patient care, hospital processes, and integrating into unit based teams.
      • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service
      • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
