      Under general supervision, to coordinate and monitor patient transport services and activities through timely and accurate dispatch of transportation requests; and to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and established policies and procedures.


      Currently there are two part time vacancies on the PM and Night shift located at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. However, the eligible list will be used for future vacancies, as they occur, including Extra-Help (Temporary) assignments.

      The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

      • Monitors the transport functions and Patient Transporters, ensuring timely and efficient completion of tasks;

      • Prioritizes dispatching assignments to the appropriate personnel;

      • Continuously monitors response times and productivity to improve patient transport performance through timely dispatching of patient transport requests;

      • Functions as a liaison and assists in coordinating patient transport activities and services with other departments;

      • May lead subordinate staff, including orienting and training new staff, and reviewing and coordinating transport assignments;

      • Assists in analyzing workload trends and staffing levels and makes recommendations, as appropriate;

      • Interacts with nursing and other support departments to ensure the quality and timely delivery of service to patients, physicians, visitors, and staff;

      • Ensures proper operation of communication device hardware and software programs and systems;

      • Maintains a safe, healthy, and orderly work environment and ensures that dispatch equipment is in good, clean working condition;

      • Assists in resolving problems related to patient, visitor, staff, or employee complaints and recommends and participates in solutions to ongoing problems or trends;

      • Identifies problems and assists in resolution by making recommendations;

      • Keeps manager/supervisor informed of activities, needs, and/or concerns;

      • Keeps accurate transport records and prints reports upon request;

      • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;

      • Performs other related duties as required.

      Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

      Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to high school graduation,

      and

      Two (2) years of patient transportation experience in an institutional healthcare or equivalent setting (e.g., hospital or clinic).

      Knowledge of:

      • Office practices and procedures, including filing systems;

      • Patient identification protocols;

      • Customer service principles and interpersonal skills;

      • Computer systems and applications;

      • Lead practices, principles, and techniques;

      • Dispatching systems and equipment;

      • Patient transport practices, procedures, and protocols, including scheduling and coordinating transports;

      • Recordkeeping practices.

      Ability to:

      • Organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on assignments;

      • Schedule, assign, and review the work of others;

      • Compose correspondence independently or from brief instructions;

      • Organize and maintain accurate records and files;

      • Adhere to standards, policies, and procedures of the hospital and follow safety guidelines for self, patient, visitors, and other employees, including Federal, State, TJC (The Joint Commission), OSHA, and CDC, and Universal Precautions and hazardous material guidelines;

      • Apply effective verbal and listening communication skills;

      • Utilize a self-dispatching system, when required;

      • Perform the duties of a Patient Transporter, when necessary;

      • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;

      • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

      • May stand and walk for long periods of time and exercise a moderate amount of physical exertion, stamina, and manual dexterity in the handling of patients and equipment;

      • May assist, support, lift, and transfer patients and/or heavy objects in a safe manner.
