- The Eligibility List will consist of both internal and external applicants who best meet or exceed the qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
- Hiring departments will have the option to consider internal applicants on the Eligibility List prior to considering all candidates on the Eligibility List.
- The Eligibility List established through this recruitment will be used to fill current/future/full-time/part-time vacancies.
- Performs, maintains, and processes bi-weekly payroll for all City employees, including timecard corrections, payroll tables, salary rates, deductions, and various leave payments.
- Provides training and coordinates the activities of designated department timekeepers.
- Evaluates and reviews department data and timecards; resolves inconsistencies to ensure conformance with MOUs, Profiles, City policy, California Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS) regulations, federal, and state laws.
- Prepares and calculates employee checks, salary changes, and retroactive pay; makes electronic transfers for direct deposits and ensures checks are accurate and completed as scheduled.
- Audits, reconciles, and prepares payroll tax reports for submittal to federal and state agencies; prepares, audits, and distributes employee W2 forms.
- Establishes and maintains detailed payroll records for employees; inputs variety of data including additional pays, deductions, contributions, tax withholdings, leave accruals, and other related data into electronic systems.
- Reviews and analyzes available data and forms for errors and inconsistencies.
- Enters, maintains, and audits employee leave accrual balances.
- Receives and responds to employee inquiries regarding payroll, taxes, deferred compensation, deductions, and calculations; researches and resolves concerns within a timely manner.
- Verifies and makes federal and state payroll tax calculations and payments and ensures compliance with federal, state, and city regulations and procedures.
- Certifies, calculates, and deducts garnishments; completes all wage and employment verification requests and ensures compliance with federal, state, and City regulations.
- Assists with implementing, updating, and testing of new software.
- Participates in new employee orientation.
- Complies and audits information for special check runs.
- List any relevant experience and education that demonstrates that you qualify for the position.
- List all periods of employment for at least the past 10 years, beginning with your most recent or present employer (including, if applicable, all employment with the City of Ontario).

The Payroll Technician works along side a dedicated team of Payroll experts within the Financial Services Agency, and processes biweekly, in-house payroll for over 1500 employees. The Payroll Technician handles a wide range of complex technical tasks to ensure the accurate, timely and compliant processing of payroll.The Ideal Candidate

The essential functions typically performed by the Payroll Technician include the following:
EducationAssociate's degree or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Public/Business Administration, or a closely related field. Additional years of applicable experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.Proof of successful completion of education requirements must be provided by way of attachment to your online application or as an email attachment sent to the Hiring Agency Representative at, or before, time of the reference check process. Knowledge of CalPERS processes/procedures and reporting requirements.
