      Pensions Actuarial Consultant / Analyst - Can be based in any of our UK/I offices (Hybrid)

      Mercer is looking for a talented and ambitious pensions actuary / analyst who is keen to further their career, focused on consulting with clients. This is an opportunity to join a great multi-disciplinary team providing clients with leading edge advice across funding, investment, risk transfer and covenant. We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills, adaptability, business acumen and a desire to be in front of clients, all underpinned by the required technical skills.

      The role:

      You will be working as part of a team to develop and deliver customised advice and solutions to clients (trustee and corporates) with a primary focus on DB pension schemes.This is an opportunity to work on a wide range of clients, direct with Scheme Actuaries and other specialists, and on a range of client teams. We tailor the client mix to support and develop an individual’s skills now and into the future.

      The majority of the base number crunching is carried out by specialist teams, which allows the consulting team to focus on solving our clients’ needs and adding value by developing innovative client solutions.

      • Leading on the preparation and delivery of both day-to-day, and strategic advice, with a focus on finding tailored solutions that meet clients’ needs; with senior support as required.

      • Providing an informed view on current topics based on client circumstances, and tailoring advice as appropriate.

      • Strong technical actuarial skills used to consult with clients, and the ability to communicate with clients in a clear and succinct manner.

      • Checking and reviewing work, including reasonableness and ‘sense checking’ of colleagues’ (and your own) work.

      • Supporting the development of more junior colleagues.

      • Taking part in setting and negotiating fees, where appropriate, with senior colleagues.

      What you will need to have:

      • Current experience working as a part-qualified/qualified actuary working for a Pension Consultancy

      • Making good progress with your FIA exams or fully qualified

      • Strong project management experience

      • Consulting experience

      Pensions Actuarial Consultant / Scheme Actuary - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, London - (Hybrid or Fully Remote)

      Mercer is seeking a Pensions Actuarial Consultant to join our multi-disciplinary team that provides clients with leading edge advice across funding, investment, risk transfer and covenant.

      A qualified actuary, in the role of Pensions Actuarial Consultant you will be working in a team to develop and deliver customised advice and solutions to clients (trustee and corporates) with a primary focus on DB pension schemes as many navigate the journey towards their long-term objective. You will have the opportunity to take responsibility for signing out DB pension disclosures for company accounts at an early stage, with a view to developing your career towards taking on the role of a Scheme Actuary and consultant for your own portfolio of clients.

      • Lead on the preparation and delivery of both day-to-day, and strategic advice, with a focus on finding tailored solutions that meet clients’ needs

      • Lead client meetings and presentations

      • Provide an informed view on current topics based on client circumstances, and tailoring advice as appropriate

      • Utilise strong technical actuarial skills used to consult with clients, and the ability to communicate with clients in a clear and succinct manner

      • Act as final technical reviewer for actuarial calculations and, where appropriate, provide peer review support

      • Agree the strategy, direction and resourcing for client work

      • Act as day to day contact for clients responsible for ensuring problem resolution

      • Participate in setting and negotiating fees, where appropriate and monitoring of fee budgets

      • Provide guidance to colleagues in the wider consulting team

      What you need to have:

      • IFOA qualification as an Actuary

      • Experience of developing your skills towards attainment of, or have recently obtained, a Scheme Actuary certificate

      • An awareness of current pension issues and how these impact clients, including key considerations and ability to talk about these and tailor your response to specific circumstances

      • Excellent communication skills, strong analytical, numerical and critical thinking skills, including a good understanding of actuarial approaches for pensions

      • Ability to manage projects, including distribution of work to junior colleagues

      • A strong understanding of a range of ways in which UK pension schemes operate

      • A willingness to learn new skills and be adaptable in a changing environment

      • Proven ability to build relationships with colleagues and clients

      • Excellent planning and organisational abilities, in order to prioritise and complete work

      What makes you stand out?

      • Experience as a signing actuary for company accounting disclosures (FRS, IAS) with additionally experience of US GAAP preferable but not essential

      • Significant experience working with trustees and/or corporates on DB pensions within an actuarial consultancy role

      • Excellent communication skills

      • Demonstrated business acumen, adaptability and a desire to be in front of clients, all underpinned by the required technical skills
