Permanent Up to 0.6FTE Staff Specialist
Department of Older Persons Mental Health, Westmead Hospital
Successful applicants will work as part of a well-established team, with peer to peer support, and opportunities for personal and professional development. There are opportunities for a variety of roles: supervision, consultation, teaching and research.
Successful applicants will provide admitting, consultative, procedural, outpatient and on-call services within the specialty as determined and required by the District.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. The position provides secondary and tertiary level consultations and management of patients with complex mental health conditions. There are comprehensive treatment programs and active research in Western Sydney Local Health District. The position is expected to provide medical input for the indigenous population with mental health issues. Successful applicants
will be expected to take part in planning and service development as well as having training responsibilities.
Preferably the applicant will hold a Certificate in Old Age Psychiatry or have experience working in Old Age Psychiatry. Applicants with more extensive experience with adult psychiatry will also be considered.
Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within six months, may be considered. If successful, the applicant may not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed.
Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Medicine at the relevant University attached to each facility. The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Western Sydney Local Health District appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the District for clinical matters.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Essential Requirements for Appointment
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
2. Sound clinical knowledge in Psychiatry Sub-Acute/Non-Acute/Rehabilitation Units demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.
3. Sound knowledge of principles of Recovery based clinical practice and integrated Mental Health Care.
4. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
o High level interpersonal and communication skills.
o Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.
o Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.
o Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision.
5. Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department
6. Experience in community and old age psychiatry. Certificate in Old Age Psychiatry is desirable.
7. Previous experience of working in consultation-liaison capacity in a General Hospital setting is desirable.

4. Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.
5. Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:
o Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude.
o Commitment to self -care and personal development.
o Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience.
o Commitment to building relationships, leading, and developing others.
o Results and outcome focused.
6. Commitment to good governance, achieving results and managing risks.
7. Demonstrated commitment to Education, Training and Research, as applicable to the position.
