      Permit Technician I

      We are searching for an experienced Permit Technician I as a full-time Regular Employee to join the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD), formerly known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID)!

      Position Summary:
      This is a technical/clerical position that requires significant responsibility with careful attention to detail, sound judgment and excellent customer skills. This position ensures that permit applications are submitted correctly with all required information, and related forms, plans, calculations and specifications are provided. It also verifies that all submitted items comply with Building Department policies and legal standards for submission for public record.

      Essential Functions:

      • Receive and review permit applications and supporting documents for proper form, sufficiency of information, and conformance with department policies and legal standards. Create workflow in computer system to initiate permitting process. Ensure permits are processed in accordance to requirements.
      • Assess new applications and compare scope of project with existing permits for relevancy. Determine appropriate permit type.
      • Greet and assist customers. Provide information, and answer questions for the public regarding departmental policies and procedures pertaining to permits. Answer telephones and provide information as requested. Route calls as necessary.
      • Collect fees.
      • Issue permits after they have been reviewed and approved.
      • Register and update contractor files electronically to ensure license and insurance requirements have been satisfied. Assist customers with the online portal registration process.
      • Perform data entry and file maintenance as required by position. Scan and archive documents as required.
      • Evaluate Alternative Material and Methods requests for proper selection of building code variance selection and review Temporary Certificate of Occupancy requests for accuracy and completeness of application
      • Process other electronic submittal requests, per department requirements, including, but not limited to, code book sales, outside normal hours inspection requests, service call 24/7 inspection requests, etc.

      Other Duties:

      • Perform or assist with any operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.
      • Participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.
      • Perform other related duties as assigned.

      Competency:

      • The individual must speak English, must be able to clearly and articulately communicate through both the spoken and written word and must have a good command of English grammar and spelling.
      • Readily able to distinguish critical communications or needs from those of a noncritical nature and be able to act accordingly. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize issues and tasks.
      • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs and other required software.
      • Advanced computer keyboard functions, data entry, record keeping techniques, and accounting skills.
      • Must have respect for confidentiality.
      • Excellent customer service skills.

      Required Qualifications:

      Education/Experience Requirements:

      • Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of building department related technical and/or construction industry experience including customer service; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience, preferably in the field of architecture, engineering, building inspection, construction or permitting.
      • International Code Council Permit Technician Certification preferred.
      • Must have demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
      • Must have the ability to operate a personal computer to retrieve and input information.
      • Must have the ability to type effectively at 30-40 words per minute.

      Driving Requirements:
      Must possess a valid Florida State Driver's license and maintain eligibility under the District's commercial vehicle program.

      Physical Demands:
      While performing the duties of this job, an employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, touch, speak, hear, and see. An employee is occasionally required to bend, kneel, reach, twist, carry, climb, push and pull. An employee must lift and/or move small articles and occasionally lift objects up to 20 pounds. An employee must demonstrate fine motor skills and to be able to operate vehicles and other equipment. An employee is occasionally required to work in heat, cold and wet/damp conditions and to navigate uneven and/or outdoor terrain. Certain positions may require work above ground or in enclosed spaces. Certain positions may have requirements of 20 pounds maximum lifting with frequent lift/carry up to 10 pounds. Positions requiring strength demands in the Heavy and/or Very Heavy category have detailed physical performance analyses available for review.

      The wage range for this position is $16.00 - 21.35 hourly.
